Losing Overdrive on long highway drive
This is the scond time this has happened going to Vegas. Car is doing fine and then all of a sudden the tranny downshifts into drive or third gear. I pull over, turn off the motor and restart it and it's ok for a while.
If I let off the gas the car goes down to idle and when I step on the gas again it revs in neutral until the standard 3rd gear drive kicks in at about 3,500 rpm.
On the way home I lost the overdrive again and couldn't get it to work until I got back into town. It only happens on long drives.
Anyone have this problem?

How hot was it outside? I found this problem happening to me on Vegas road trips, in particular when it was really hot outside >90. I think your tranny is just overheating. On one trip I had to run water over the tranny until it cooled enough to where it would operate properly. It showed the exact symptoms that you are describing.

It was hot enough for me to have tu run the ac so I guess that this is probably the culprit. I am also due for a flush and this could be adding to the problem.
This weeks project is now set. Tranny flush and a tranny cooler. Any suggestions on a cooler?

I would go with a B&M. It is engineered in such a way that the cooler is not used until the fluid heats up to proper operating temperature. This way your tranny fluid heats up faster at start-up.
And with the cooler, not always the bigger the better. You want one rated for your car. They do it by the type of driving and conditions. Pep Boys can do an easy match up. Just have to read the boxes of the tranny coolers. Once you get it sized up you can check out a properly sized B&M if you want to go that route.
