grinding noise from transmission + whirring noise
today my transmission started to make like a grinding noise everytine its under stress, like going uphill or quick acceleration. at the same time it started making another noise.. every time (even if i'm parked) i touch gas pedal it makes a whirring noise for 3-4 seconds. it comes from underneath the car. It sounds like a small electric motor or sth like that (like window motor ;-) and it stops. if the car is idling... can't hear it... if i for example step on a gas it will do it for 3 seconds... then i release gas and it does it again for 3 seconds.. the same thing happens when i turn on or off the engine.
any ideas? do i need a new tranny? ;-(
its automatic with 78K miles on it.

I doubt it's a loose heat shield. Take it to a mechanic you trust. I say that because most of the time the heat shields don't make a whirring sound, it's more of a rattle (that's been my exp. anyway). I'm thinking it is probably either your gears might be starting to slip, or the power steering can have a whirring noise too.
i took it to a friendly shop, they put it on the lift and the noise is deff coming from inside of tranny. but they said they don't know exactly what it is. never heard sound like that before.
