Help with DTC P1706

I have a 2000 SE 5-speed. I got a ces light today and had it checked out at Advanced Auto. The result was a P1706. When I got home, I checked it out in the faq section and the description was "P1706 - Park / Neutral Position Switch" This seems more like an A/T problem. Anyone with a 5-speed experience this? What did you do to correct it? I am not noticing anything out of the ordinary. Everything seems to be fine except for the cel. Thanks in advance.

seems like an auto thing

The transmission range switch detects the selector lever position
and sends a signal to the TCM.

ok just looked in the MT section of the service manual. the 5 speed does have one. its the sensor that tells ECU when tranny is in reverse to turn your reverse lights on.

My dumb a$$ was looking in the automatic section. Doesn't appear to be something that will leave me stranded. If I am reading correctly, It's only purpose is to turn the back-up lights on and off. Thanks Soonerfan.

I jacked the car up to make sure the wire was attached to the sensor. Just to be sure, this is the cover on the lower driver's side portion of the tranny with a black wire coming off of it....correct? Is it possible for the switch to be bad even though the back-up lights are operating correctly? Also, If I have to swap this switch, can I drain the fluid from this hole after I remove the switch? Those of you who purchased this, who did you buy from and what was the cost?

Has anyone with a 5-speed experienced this code? It comes on for a day or two and then goes out for a while by itself.

I just got this code today and have a 2000 5 speed SE. Did this ever get figured out? I just cleared the code but I was trying to look for more info. I noticed, over the last couple months, that my clutch is going bad. Could that be part of the problem? The info I got on the scanner was "Manufacturer contrl transmission". Is it just the switch being discussed in this thread?

I have a 2002 6-speed and have the same code and I am also wondering who has replaced the switch? Price? I've had this code before but went away on it's own.
