front end colision got Q a/t headlights.

Hi guys I got into accident yesterday. Headlights out. (HID's) minordamage to hood. Bumper and bumper cover needs to be replaced. I just was on the phone with my insurance company. And they do cover mylights but only if I show them a copy of reciept. I got them off hands in college for $450 as is. They weren't stolen cause tabs they ok and they didn't look like they were ripped out. My lights were OEM and I don't want to buy duplicates. though I won't get them for $450. What should I do? how to get enough to buy new lights?
P.S. bulbs and ballasts are fine I've checked. I basically need only covers.

Thanks and sorry if this is repost.

BTW I had my car towed to home. Have I done a dumb thing?

an insurance company already paid for those headlights. the money was paid to the owner who walked outside and saw that his headlights had walked away.

$450 for a set of HIDs?? yeah thats legit

insurance will not pay for the headlights. they will only pay you for 01 headlights

You got them "off hands"? WTF does this mean? I interpret that as "off the hands of the thief." I agree, if you only paid $450 for a pair of OEM lights, they were stolen and you get no sympathy from me. As far as insurance, unless you told them beforehand and provided proof of purchase, you're SOL. Oh the ironing.......

My insurance will cover any aftermarket parts (inlcuding headlights) as long as you have proof that they were on the car (i.e. photos, busted lights, etc). Who keeps receipts for all their car parts???

That said, if you got the OEM HIDs for $450, you bought stolen property...no question. The tabs don't have to be ripped...thieves can just open the hood and unscrew the two bolts on the top and take it, if you don't have security bolts.

Had a pair offered to me for 400 from a guy who owned a 2002 maxima. Whats your point, that every person who sells a pair, cheap stole them?
Maybe its because they didnt want to a hasstle shipping it or getting low bawled on a site like this.

you realize these cost around $1500 right? so yes, $400 seems very fishy since they are worth so much

I agree. Not everyone is going to ask exact retail or close value of parts. Weather it's headlights, springs, stereos, etc. I have a co worker who's 03 max was crashed and he parted everything out for cheap. Some people just want to get rid of unwanted parts. I myself have OEM 16'' rims from my crashed 2k SE sitting in my garage. Did I steal it if I want to get rid of them for under 300/400 bucks? No sir I think not.

You coudn't sell OEM 16's for $100. The difference is demand. There is no demand for 16" SE wheels, whereas there his very high demand for the 02-03 HIDs (both from maxima owners and from non-owners who want the ballasts). The ballasts by themselves could be sold to some ricer for more than $400.

Sure, there is bound to be a person here or there who just wants to get rid of them quickly - but that is a small percentage who are willing to sell them for 1/3 their retail value. I bought mine for $700 and IIRC it was one of the best prices I had ever heard of....

@ people yelling "STOLEN!"

Do you know how many people go to salvage yards buy expensive items like HIDs for $300-350 and then resell them for a $100 profit? Tons. Hardly any thief goes through the time to pop open the hood for a clean steal. The entire point of stealing is to do it quickly. And our HIDs aren't worth much anymore. Perf.Depot now sells them for $570 last I checked.

The thieves rip them out, take the ballast, bulb and ignitor and sell them. Everything else they junk. No thief would keep a complete set of HIDs in such great condition. He'd have ripped every part of that housing apart.

You will be surprised at how much new OEM headlights cost. When I got into a wreck the insurance company was giving the body shop $445 to replace my stock AE headlights, and instead the body shop cut $445 off my deductible ($1000) and let me buy whatever lights I wanted. Check to see how much your insurance company will give you for your stock headlights. BTW I bought my OEM 02 HIDS for under $350 from ebay, take a look on there and see what you find, you may be surprised how much you can get them for now, they are going for pretty damn cheap...

I believe this is not gonna change anything and it's still my fault right?

I though t usually cops arrest people for driving without issued license but the one who wrote me a ticket for accident just let the other driver go?

the condition of the others drivers license doesnt change anything about the accident, as far as i know. whether he was suspended, revoked, or didnt have a license period, you still caused the accident. i dont know why the officer would have let him go or if something was arranged, but no, you cant get out of the accident like that, your still at fault.

Bad news for me guys my max could be totaled by ins.

In case it'll be totaled should I keep the car or let it go?

1. I have a GAP coverage -> I will no pay the money I owe?
+
2. keep the car and fix it? just hit 100k, both airbags are blown, bumper cover , bumper reinforcement, right HID headlihgt. Possibly AC condenser.

3. let the car go and buy another one?

I was also just in an accident with my baby, guy ran directly into my front driver side wheel. Anyway, just wanted to comment that the replacement headlight going into mine from the bodyshop is listed on the quote at $735. Mine is a 2k2 so this is the replacement stock HID.
