2000 maxima thermostat replacement

how easy is it to change the thermostat in a 2000 maxima? my car is due for a new thermostat, and hopefully repacing it removes my CEL for P1126. anyone know of a DIY article online or some simple advice to point me in the right direction? tia

I'm sure any maxima manual at auto zone or pep boys would explain it well enough - but I'm not aware of any online how-to's.

Man i just recently purchased at 2000 nissan maxima se.. changing out the thermostat is the easiest thing in the world. on the vq30de its on the left hand side and theres anotehr valve on the right hand side.. change both..very easy if you have basic mechanic skills should have no problems..

ummmm why do you need to change it ? I have 160K miles on mine almost and I don't even think bout changing it- unless I am in that area working on something. Change your coolant on time and keep it clean looking- thermostat will pretty much outlive your car.

the heat doesnt work unless the car is in motion, plus the car runs cool in the summer, causin the CEL light to come on for air/fuel mixture. im pretty sure the engine is running cool because the thermostat, and therefore the ECU is running it rich. so i figure, ill change the thermostat first cause its the easiest and cheapest fix.

what do you mean maxpaul, theres two thermostats?

i dont know what the other is called..if you want ill get both part numbers for you.. there is the thermostat on the left side of the engine (pass)(hot side).. thats the main one, the one that opens up to the radiator.. then on the intake side, right underneath the intake (cold side) there is another valve, its held in place by 3 screws. dont know what the purpose of this one is, i ran the car without it and it was fine but since its roughly $15 dealer price i changed it out..better safe then sorry.

I think you will find out that the main stat is dealer-only item as it comes with a housing. Second stat is a standard size stat that also fits almost all GM cars and those you can find anywhere...

Motor swap

I have a 1999 maxima and i blew the motor. i had bought a 2000 maxima motor with seventy thousand and was told it should if fit. Now that i havethe motor out i have had to swap the intake and a couple other small things but the problem is the 2000 motor has 2 thermostats and the 1999 only has one. So heres the next problem i need to use the old piece that the antifreeze travels from one side of the block to the other and it doesnt have a port for a second thermostat. Does any one think it is a possbility to block that port from under the intake or will that cause huge problems.
Thanks Dan

Second thermostat

The 2000 maxima motor has two thermostats whats the importance of the second one under the intake. i am trying to put this motor in a 99 maxima and the only way to have it work would be to close that second thermostat off. Does any body know more about this.

The VQ30 has the coolant control valve in the coolant outlet (deleted in the VQ35) which starts to open at 203 deg. and allows coolant to flow through the block. Up to that point coolant flows through the heads only back to the rad. when the thermostat is open. DO NOT block it off, obviously, but if you leave it wide open (no coolant valve installed) I can't tell you if it would be that detrimental to the engine operation except that coolant flow through the heads could be affected at the cooler coolant temps and/or possibly the block could be overcooled under certain conditions.

How do you figure it's be the 'only way' to have it work? You can have a functioning CCV with the swap.

What are you doing, swapping the USIM over in place of the 00VI? If so, you do realize that you're getting rid of one of the more common and powerful mods that 4th gen guys do, right?

Don't swap the intake, just drop the motor in as is. Wire up the injector harness connectors, get yourself an RPM switch to activate the 00VI, you'll have yourself a running and more powerful Max.

This should be posted in the noob thread, not bumping up a 3 year old thread.

Over 1000 posts? You've been here long enough to know that aftermarket thermostats are crap. Go with OEM.

Seems as if you have a lemon with all your recent problems. Sell it, and get a 4th gen. Both gens come and go for really good prices theses days.
