Help please: rotten egg smell.....
Evening gang,
My situation/Problem:
I need help with an existing mechanical issue. After driving my car for about 15 minutes I get this foul rotten egg smell floating into the cabin of the car. I am also getting this throaty growl coming from underneath the car when I start and accelerate.
My questions:
1. Is this smell related to a bad cat. converter?
2. If so, what would be a good replacement or can I put any converter on the car?
3. What's an average price for them?
4. Is the growl related to a bad converter as well?
5. Where's a good place to get 02 sensors?
thanks in advance for the help guys
Chris

Does the growl sound like an exhaust leak? Maybe you've got a leak before the cat... that would explain the egg smell... I would try to get your car on a lift... see if you can figure out if there is a leak. As far as it being a bad cat... that's a good excuse to get a magnaflow cat or another aftermarket replacement. Just don't get a testpipe.. because you'll still get the smell (and CEL)

1. yes
2. you get what you pay for. if you have any junkyards around you, they can cut out your old cat, use the flanges and weld a new cat on. or you can go to nissan dealership and have a brand new one installed.
3. around ny, you can go junkyard and get it done for 100 bucks. oem will probably be anywhere from 200-400.
4. a leak is causing the growl. it can be from the flanges or a hole in cat converter itself.

recommendations re: cat. converter and shocks
Thanks to thsoe who responded. Now I have another questions to ask. Since it appears that I do need a cat. converter (among other things) what kind should I get and where can I get a good deal for it?
I also need shocks. What brand do you guys recommend and again where should I get them?
thanks gents

If you're under warranty (<80,000 miles) go to the dealer they'll do it for free under the emissions warranty.
If you're getting struts, get Tokico Illuminas.
(I do suspension installs for org members, and you're about an hour from me, just a heads up if you're interested)

As for going to the dealership, I am almost at 90K miles so getting something for free is a lost

Are you kidding? He's out of warranty. They will do nothing but empty his wallet.
