HOW TO: Replace incabin micro filters
I just did this the other day and thought I'd take some quick pics for those that are interested in changing their cabin filters. Nissan recs changing them every 15k, I don't think mine were ever replaced.
I decided to take off the entire glove compartment assembly (I think there is a way to do it w/o).
This is the only plug that needs to be unplugged.
This is a pic of the compartment removed. There is a screw on each corner, 2 on the latch(top center), and 2-3 clips.
Closer pic of filter cover. There's one clip on bottom for removal.
Old filters being removed (just slide out).
Old vs. new.
New filters slide in the same way the old ones came out. Pretty simple proceedure, well worth the time and money.

and the 02 must be diffirent...mine is more square and doesnt have rubber around it...just the filter.
BTW, pretty sure mine has never been removed..it was freaking DIRTY!!!!! leaves and crap. i have no idea how air got through

well im pretty sure that its washable since the sticker had instructions on how to do it. so, per the instructions, its soaking in soapy water.
side note, the sticker said to wash it "every 12,000 KM" what the hell? was my car supposed to go to canada??

After putting mine in like 2 years ago, since I didn't have them from the factory, I checked mine on Saturday. They weren't even that dirty, I just knocked them on the driveway a bit to dislodge the little bits of debris.
The filters on my sister's Accord were so much easier to get to. No screw removal or unplugging harnesses necessary.

I paid $45 at the dealership and they're the same price on courtesyparts.com.

There might be better deals somewhere else or cheaper generic versions perhaps.

Just got one from Dave B. for $40.14. List was $48.95. I checked around for aftermarket and a Wix was the same as the list price for the OEM.
My '00 w/87K did not have one installed and had started to smell musty when the AC was first turned on. The filter eliminated the smell immediately.

i was lookin at walmart for replacement filters yesterday. According to Fram's product catalog, they have a filter for like 8 bucks that will fit in a 2k maxima. Is this a fib? I'm pretty sure i'd need to get two of them, but has anybody taken this 'not so expensive' route, via cheaper junk from walmart?

www.rockauto.com has them for $31.79 + $5 for shipping. Made by Wix, fits and works just fine.

Hey up here in Canada we always get gouged, seems they say okay lets do the $US to $Can conversion and add another 50% for the helluv it! Every single mod piece on my car I've shipped from the US, probably would on the filter too!

good lucks on this thread my man.. I recently just purchased a 2003 6 speed maxima and that day I bought new in cabin filters because I assumed most likely they are 3 years old with 44,000 miles on them. So now I know how to replace them. Oh ya my car isn't stock anymore and I have had it for 4 days HAHAHAA

I changed my own filter and remember the warning for those with 2K2 and 2K3's....DO NOT DISCONNECT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION SINCE IT CONNECTS TO THE AIRBAG AND WILL THROW A CODE.
Does anyone else remember this warning?
I would be careful disconnecting any electrical connections.

I had a hard time removing the glovebox on my 01 Max. Can someone post step by step instructions? Pictures would be nice too. It's not as straight forward, maybe 01 has different glovebox? It's the whole cover that attaches to the glovebox also need to come off correct?

it's included the plastic on the right of the glovebox... 1 screws each side and two screws on the black hanger, 6 screws total then the little light bulb connecter, turn it then it will come off, the the two plastic clip for the airbag connecter(i think...) then just pull the whole thing out.....
$150USD is nothing compare $285 + tax CDN on Victoria nissan....for that stupid filter change....

how about you stfu. it's not $40, its probably double that. and it's the principle of the matter that you're getting gouged for a filter. If you can find filters for $40, then good for you, why don't you go write in to Reader's Digest and tell the whole world how special you are.

About a week ago I planned on changing the filter on mine, but I had the sticker inside the glove box that stated mine was washable. I think Nissan changed the filter on the 03 models to the washable filter. My local dealer does not even stock the filter I have in my car, but they can order it.
Mine was pretty dirty since I doubt it had ever been cleaned. I washed it and let it dry, put it back in the car. The glove box removal is a PIA. I had the hardest time getting it back in the car, since the tab on the bottom closest to the passenger side door has to be snapped over the clip where the screw hole is located. I finally got it installed after a few choice words and some muscle. I was afraid I was going to break the lower plastic tab on the dashboard trying to get it back in the car. It should be easier the next time I clean the filter.

Don't do the screws on the latch inside the glove compartment. You don't need to take those out, since you are removing the glove box as a whole. All the screws you have marked across the top of glove box in the first picture are correct, but there are two additional screws located along the bottom of the glove box that you need to remove, as well, basically on the bottom corner on each side.
Then you need to sort of snap the glove box out of position by pulling it forward. You will see how the clips are designed once you pull the box loose. There are pressure clips located on both sides of the box that help hold it in place. Be sure not to disconnect the yellow plug on the top of the box, since it is your air bag plug. You will just want to remove it by pushing out the 2 plastic connectors that hold it to the top of the glove box. You can go ahead and unplug the light connector on the top.
Once you pull the glove box out of position, you will be able to see the filter mounted in the air exchange box.
