Personally, I would because it's either gonna stay there or move it's way up the ventilation system.

My '01 Max did not come equiped with a cabin air filter, but did have the housing for one. So I installed a Wix 24823. Works great. Ordered the NAPA version from fleetfilter.com for $20.90 (+shipping) a couple of months ago.

I don't see that one on their site, but if they carry it it is a great price.

I would be careful disconnecting any electrical connections.

Not sure if this was covered already - but as clarification:
There's two molex connectors in in the glovebox.
DO NOT DISCONNECT THE BIG YELLOW CONNECTOR!! This is the airbag connector.
To free this connector from the glovebox assembly - Simply squeeze the base of the two plastic seats ON the Yellow Molex assembly (don't separate the connector itself) and push them thru the mount bracket to allow the glove box assembly to be removed.

You HAVE to disconnect the smaller GLOVEBOX LIGHT molex connector to remove the box, and gain access to the filter housing.

I counted six screws to remove: four corners, and two in the latch assembly. It takes two minutes if you know what you're doing. No need to remove or unscrew ANYTHING else.

It is not listed, and yes it's a great price. I can't remember where, but somehow I found the filter number for the factroy-installed, cabin air filter that Nissan equiped in the later '01 models than one I own. I cross referenced that model on Wix's web site and called Fleetfilter's 866 number to order the NAPA version (#4823, I think). It's a 2-part filter, looks almost like the Nissan one posted on Courtesy's site. Works great IMHO, especially for a car that never had one of those filters installed for the 1st 100K of it's life.

If you go to Filter1.com, they do list the 24823 Wix (not NAPA) filter number, but it's around $37 currently. Filter1 has decent prices and charges no shipping if you order 6+ filters at the same time. Fleetfilter does charge shipping. I got the 4823 filter and 7 other NAPA filters at the same time for about $9.64 total shipping. The NAPA 1356 oil filter for the Maxima was an outrageous $3.39!!! These guys got good prices if you like the NAPA brand.

More retentive ramblings....

Yes.
You can also remove the retention cover where the Air Fitler is supposed to be, and run the blower on high -- this will blow alot of crap out of the pathway.....just remember - that stuff is going to blow all over your passenger's side interior when it comes out, just old your hand or the cover near it to deflect it downwards onto the floormat!

Also, it's a good idea to remove the blower motor (three screws) and empty-out any stuff that's lodged in there. It will make alot of noise if you have pine needles or something simlar stuck in there. You can vaccum this area too if needed. It needs to be clean and free of obstuction in order to work efficiently.

When I bought my 02, it said it had the in-cabin filter, but it was a cheapo, and it got tossed at about 10k miles. I replaced it with the OEM Carbon-activated filter, that was SUPPOSED to be in there to begin with.

I took mine out yesterday and blew-out both elements thoroughly with an airhose (it was clogged) and then soaked it in a bucket of hot water with dish detergent. Better than buying a new one, and it looks like new, and ready for another 30k miles!

You can disconnect the power connector at the top of the glove box that is white in color. This plug is the power connector for the in glove box lamp. The yellow connector is for the air bag sensor and will seriously mess ^$*@ up if you unplug it.

If you want to try and clean your filter, look for this product at the dealership or an auto parts store http://www.amazon.com/Ozium-OZIUM-AI.../dp/B0006GDBEK You can start your engine, turn on your AC then spray this junk into the vents that are near the drivers side windshield wiper. I've also removed my in cabin filter and sprayed the hell out of it. But ultimately, replace your filter and you'd be problem free for 1-2 years.

I ended up just washing my in-cabin filter with warm soapy water. Using a paper towel i just hand picked as much of the debris that I could and then used a vacuum cleaner. In the end, the washable stock filter wasn't that clean but it was a big improvement over the 70k miles worth of accumulated garbage. My goal was accomplished though, since the musty smell from the AC and the vents hasn't come back yet.

I think this goop is more for the condensor COILS than the actual filter. Usually, the condensation that gathers in the internal workings (condensor) during heavy summer use is the culprit for this musty odor.
This area is hard to reach and clean without a MAJOR disassembly of the dash and HVAC unit.
This is why you hear people recommending that you run FRESH air thru your a/c with the compressor OFF for at least 1-5 mintues during the summer and heavy use....it clears out the built-up condensation on the coils that can lead to mold forming and causing this odoriffic nastiness!

I have a Volvo that literally runs the blower for five to ten mins after you shut-off the car to rectify this situation.

Removing odor/mold from the filter can be as simple as removal and soaking in soapy water - as discussed above.

Does anyone have instructions how to replace the micro filter on the 6 generation Maxima? I've got the glove box out, but can't remove the two latches holding the front cover of the filter. Please help.

Isn't it pretty straightforward? The 2006 users manual says to just "disengage" the hook tabs. Its on page 8-17.

And btw, this question might be more suited in the 6th Gen forum, since it seems slightly different from the 5th Gen filters.

Puppetmaster, thanks for a quick reply. I can't seem to disengage those tabs, and don't want to break them either. i'll try to snap a picture later to show what they look like.

Just placed brand new filters in my 2000 max today, didn't come with any. Looked inside the compartment, dust, leaves, etc...was all up in there, vacuumed most of it out. Pretty simple procedure, took about 20 mins for me, bought the filters off of ebay for about $20 OEM from Nissan, great deal. Anyway, I don't really notice a difference as of yet, but I guess over time I will.

20x20x1 Home Furnace HEPA filter with allergen blocker ===> $3.89 <===

Cut to fit factory location FTMFW.

If it's good enough for my whole house, then it's good enough for my car.

I've run across that "mod" several times. My only problem with that is the lack of activated charcoal. Dust and pollen don't bother me, but odors do. First time I really appreciated the filter was when skunk odor came into the car. I hit the recirculate and turned the fan on high. The stench disappeared in a couple seconds. Life before the filter, I would have to open the windows and try to let it air out naturally, but that wasn't always successful and usually you trade the stench of skunks for manure because it's always seems to happen out in the middle of nowhere. But since I spend most of my driving in the city, the charcoal prevents me from choking on exhaust fumes. There, you don't have a choice of rolling down the windows because it doesn't help if you're in gridlock. For some reason, every Ford exhaust always smells like sulfur.

Looks like this has gotten popular over the last few days.

I bought a 2000 SE back a couple of months ago. I guess wherever these people lived there were trees all over. When I turn on the AC a foul stench emanates for the 1st few seconds.

Tonight I went through the process of removing the glove box. And opened the filter section. No filter in this car......Man the mess that is in this box is disgusting. I got my shop vac out and struggled with cleaning the area because I don't have a vac attachment that's thin and long enough. Tomorrow I will get a length of flexible tubing that will make it easier to clean. This box is full of wet leaves, decomposing bugs etc.

Bleeech!

So the question is should you spritz a bleach solution in the filter hole to kill possible bacteria?

FYI: AutoZone part #042-2038 made by Beck-Arnley cost $37.99
special order. one day to get unless you order on Friday/Saturday/Sunday.
If you live in/near Raritan, NJ come see me at AutoZone to order yours today! haha.. this is not a marketing ploy.

Also thank you very much for the HOWTO thread, it made this procedure very easy. My filter has 86k miles on it and was pretty gross when I removed it. I did follow the sticker inside the glove box though and washed it. I use the vehicle's fans/AC very seldom so it wasn't a nescessity to have it changed IMO.

Lysol probably works just as well and smells better.

Edit: I'd like to know how difficult it would be to disassemble the whole box because the last time I replaced the filter, I noticed that a good amount of debris had gotten around the filter and lodged into the core. I'd like to give the whole thing a good scrubbing.

Something that struck me as really bizarre when I was cleaning out my filter was that there were large leaves and maple tree seeds stuck in the filter. But how the heck did they get there?! The holes in the mesh over the air intake aren't that big. Anyone else notice this? Does this mean there's other intakes elsewhere besides the ones under the wipers? Anyone?
