SES code P0442 meens get a new gas cap

I have been having this SES light come on intermittently, so I brought it to the stealership today at which point they told me that I needed a new gas cap and they charged me 30$ for the 2 grueling minutes of their time.

Moral of the story, save yourself 20$ in gas and 30$ on the stealership and just change your gas cap if you pull a code P0442 SES light.

That is all

I've been having this problem too. It's getting to the point where I get an SES light after every fill up. I'm not sure it's a problem with the gas cap though. The part it screws into is pretty corroded on my max.

Good find, I'm sure this post will help quite a few people. I remember when my mom first bought a 4th gen Maxima (brand new in 96), a week after or so, the SES light came on, she freaked out and wouldn't drive it. Turns out she didn't tighten the gas cap all the way.

p0442 means get a new gas cap SOMETIMES

there are several things that can cause a p0442. the gas cap is one of them, but it certainly isnt the only one.

I have a 2002 SE

I'm getting the P0442 code. I noticed the intake where the gas goes into the car is pretty rusted/corroded so I'm wondering if this is causing the gas cap to not get a goood seal. I tried a new gas cap from AutoZone but I couldn't get a tight seal at all.

Any other suggestions before I suck it up and go to the dealership for help? I have to pass the state emissions in one week so I don't have a lot of time. My local mechanic has not been helpful is solving. Thanks in advance.

If your filler neck is all corroded, then get a new one.

I had been drivn with this code for over a year and a half, I knew what the problem was but just never bothered to get a new cap. Actually I would always forget everytime I was in an autoparts store.

So I recently had to go through emissions and in CT they won't test your car with a service engine light. So before the test I had an idea, put a little lithium grease around the threads and seal on the cap. Bingo no code in over two months. I did the same to the wife's new Explorer, Gas cap was always somewhat difficult to screw on. Not anymore.

P0455 can also mean you need a new gas cap or need to tighten yours. In my case, the gas cap was loose.

Good thing is you can just put the code into the search box and find out what you need pretty quickly.

Ive been running this code for about 3 weeks now (off and on) and i have my mechanic run the code, buy a new gas cap, clean up rust corrosion, drive home, light comes on, and repeat. Been through this process Three times! My mechanic told me that the only thing he can do is smoke the system to see if the rust has led to a hole the creates the error. "Small evap leak"

Any help out there? this is just my .02, but i need to fix this ASAP. Im tired of new gas caps.
