I am almost in need of a new muffler. I got a y and b pipe already. I understand that the 5hp gain on the AE edition is in the muffler itself. Can someone clarify this for me? IF it is I guess its obvious to get this muffler then a standard 5th gen replacement.

that is much argued here. its basically an infiniti muffler that nissan says adds 5 hp. most people think its an advertising gimic

dont get the AE muffler. youll never get any more gains from a muffler anyway, plus its extremely unattractive (it has ugly little tips that point downward). Are your Y and B pipes aftermarket? If they are then I'd stick with a stock 5th gen muffler to keep the sound down. If theyre stock, then go with a Cattman muffler and you'll get awesome sound and looks.

Yeah, I am looking to get rid of my ugly-a$$ stock exhaust. Looking at the HKS rear section.

Aftermarket y and b...I love the wrap tip on the SE exhaust..I guess its not on the infinit then ....I was in no way looking for an aftermarket muffler..I was sticking with stock, was just curious about the AE/I30 muffler..

Thanks!

the ae muffler is identical to the 5th and 5.5 gen internally. the only different is the tips. the b pipe and ecus were the only parts with different part numbers that could explain the supposed 5hp but by my dynos and a few others, its obvious its just not there.

Is this true? Theres some sort of car law that gives these companies a leaway on HP specs? Hence the reason Nissan/Infiniti can claim the extra 5hp eventhough its not there?

power numbers seem to be misrepresented on a regular basis. it seems the industry is attempting to mainstream the process of measuring though, hence the change (decrease in output) in the power of cars like the acura tl. the same holds true for the 3.5 in the 5.5gens. according to most dynos ive seen and ones on here, the hp numbers were overinflated and the torque was underated.

Somewhere I read that '01 i30 (and may be some versions of AE) muffler has an additional valve inside the muffler that opens at the higher RPM/temp and thus flows better and that's where the +5HP comes from... I'll see if I can dig up Nissan's link to it...

sooner is right. nissan marketed it like the ae was the only maxima that came with it but they are identical internally. im not sure about the 6th gens though. im not a big fan of fwd cadillacs.
