The startup rattle is unrelated... That's a flaw that Nissan actually admitted to...

I've had this pinging sound for quite some time now. It sounds like a rattling noise between 1800-2300 rpms. I've done everything under the sun to fix the problem to no avail. I have a new MAF, had the fuel injection serviced, use only super unleaded, and the car is all stock.

I spoke w/ a Nissan service advisor and he couldn't help me out. He too was stumped. I took the car to trusted mechanic and he's going to change the knock sensor and do the TSB on the timing chain. If that doesn't resolve it, he suggested going one step cooler on the spark plug to cure the pinging. I'll keep ya posted!!!!

are you talkinga bout a ping or a rattle?

Once in a while I'll take the car to the RPM range it rattles at, and nothing is there.. I get excited but of course it comes back very soon.. Seems like there are some variables which actively cause it to occur.. as opposed to something passive which just happens all the time..

I dunno

I have always thought this discussion is about the 1600-2100 rpm rattle noise, since it's what the title says? When did someone start talking about startup rattling noise? Anyway, I have that problem too, and the problem becomes more apparent especially if I have not driven the car for a day or two. Maybe it's because the oil doesn't provide as much lubrication anymore.

I might have found a fix for the 1600-2100 rpm rattling problem. Since I put 76's 92 octane gas a couple of days ago, most of my rattling noise has gone away and I have got very good gas mileage. I'm talking about 150-160 miles to the 1/2 tank, mostly city-driving. Compare that to Chevron's 100-120 miles.

What about that Techron stuff in Chevron?

Well, it started in post #8 on this thread with the TSB. I myself even thought there was a fix, but it was about the timing chain sprocket. If you read from there you will see the posts go back and forth.

You say that you had a catch can but it did not work. What type of catch can was it?

I would love to know how you get 150-160 miles on 1/2 a tank because for me that’s amazing. I live in NYC and I dong get anything close to that.

I used them a long time ago, when my mileage was 1x,000. Then I switched to BG44K at 2x,000. Now, I'm gonna try Seafoam.

Where did I say I have a catch can? I don't have any. I'm just saying I don't have oil burning problems like others do. Not yet, anyway. I run GAB without the snorkel and stock exhaust.

Try switching gas brand. Even though they're both rated at 92 octane, 76's gave me better gas mileage, less pinging/knocking, and much much smoother engine performance than Chevron's. 76's 92 octane is $3.09/gal and Chevron's $3.04/gal. Thanks, but I'm sticking with 76 now.

Well, what do you know, I added the leftover oil that i had to my engine (about 0.5 quarts), and the range where the rattle is noticeable became VERY NARROW. I would have added more, but that was the last 5W-30 Mobil1 i had...

P.S. by VERY NARROW i meanb, 1100-1200rpm...

Hi guys,
I had the pinging noise around 1800-2000rpm as well. Since i changed my Advanced Timing and switched to Shell V-power Racing - 100 octane fuel, the rattling is gone. I run with GAB(second edition ), Y-pipe and NGK PFR6G-11 stock spark plugs

See what I told you? I'm probably gonna run my car till the few last drops of gas before fill-up with 76 again.

Anyone notice the colder plugs? That may have helped as well.

I got my car in June with 68,XXX miles. Now this problem is occuring in my car too and I can feel alot of vibration on my pedal under certain rpm's. I don't know if you guys also have vibration problems but I do and mine has a rattle too I guess. It's almost like valves sticking/clicking. I'm tired of this sh*t. My car is totally stock, run Shell 93 (gonna try Sunoco 93 soon), I use German Castrol, have a catch-can (Home Depot Edition). I have yet to replace my plugs if that helps at all. I don't mind the rattle as much as the vibration. It sucks. What the hell can it be? Alot of us are confused and don't know what to do. Neither do I.

Do you have an owners manual? Try 'colder' plugs... (6 instead of 5) NGK yes.
