Rev Limiter

I recently opened up my Max to full acceleration and slammed the redline. I usually try to keep it away from there, but while watching a car that turned onto a road while passing, I focused more on the car ahead, and getting around traffic than my RPMs.

I felt a jolt, that of course I've not felt before, and noticed I was around 6800-7000 RPM's. I wondered if that could have been the rev limiter kicking in to protect my sorry butt. LOL. The engine revved fine, I didn't hear any clacking or metal being shredded. Of course today (a day or two later), my SES light for the P1320 (cylinder coils) kicked in and I now have hurky jerk driving as I'm missing terribly.

I thought that the actual redline could and has been updated on aftermarket computers. Any feedback on a 2nd gear Rev Limit and how it would feel, or the "real" Redline?

when i beat on my car, a few days later i got the primary ignition code as well; not that it specifically meant the cylinder coils. but i reset it, and didn't beat on it as hard, and the code never came back. so i'm guessing it missed temporarily at really high RPMs.
btw, i was at 6500 or so

Heh was a sudden jerk and scared the F#$% outta me. LOL Never hit it before.

The SES light was on beforehand, but I think ramming the car to its limits did it in. I already emailed DaveB about 2 weeks ago. It seems that I have to get to replacin them now. Please tell me the Bank 1 (?), firewall side is not as bad as it looks to get into.

And yes I did clear the code, but it's jerkin me around. Heh

In fact during dyno tuning, we did 11 runs in one hour, going to fuel cut every single time. No codes issues whatsoever.

I love this quote... only because it's true.
Because the Maxima tachometers are calibrated by 1st graders and underpants gnomes

ROFL nice quote. I figured the chance of me doing anything was minimal, as the Limiter is supposed to stop you from doing damage. It just overlapped my SES code which was thrown 2-3 weeks ago, and the enginestarted to buck/miss the day after I revved it that hard.

Well no matter, calling DaveB to order new Coils.

Thanks all

Many maximas here have limters in that area (7000-7500)... And still make power, AND have enough torque down low to boot. I guess I have 2 MTR's (Maxima Type R's)

How far can this motor go being completly stock? I dont redline all the time or anything, but ive heard a lot about S/DOHC engines being able to take higher revs than pushrod motors. stock limiter is 6600, heard the vq30 can safely go to 7200, true story?

.....i have hit the limiter many of times during hard acceleration and neva threw a code (knock on wood)...i dont think the code was a result of you hitting the limiter. nay have been an already existing problem. my $.02

I've hit the limiter a few times, but nothing bad came from it. Thankfully, my Maxima is one of the few with a properly calibrated tach. Smacks redline right at 6600.

Since our tachs are off, then you're still 200-400 RPM shy of the true not indicated, 'red line'

I try never to redline(around 6500 rpm) or hit the rev limiter unless absolutely necessary to redline witch is 6000 rpm. My car makes max power at about 4300 rpm and goes down in power after that.

yes but max power is only 121 hp. meh, didn't buy it for power, just a DD that I ended up loving a lot. Remember this is a first generation VG30E engine in my car, not your VQ30DE(K), for its time it was great, but of course nowadays it is nothing. Oh boy, whatever.

I never actually hit the rev limiter on my car.

i hit the 6500 fuel cut many times, i only overrevved it twice, both times were about 7000rpms.

you can ONLY overrevv when you downshift in a MT.

The auto's actually shift early at 6k right? or is that just 4th gen? i've taken it to 6600, and hit the limiter once maybe twice, the tach is right where its supposed to be since it seems the limiter is about 6700. My buddies 4th gen vq shifts at 59-6k unless he keeps it in gear with the shifter

On my 2k2, the tach says the redline is at 6600 (like my old 2k 5spd) my 2k would go to 6600 than cut. my 2k2 (auto) goes to about 6800-6900 than cuts. I think that the rev limiter was higher and never updated the tach (maybe) cause do you notice the infiniti 3.5L's have a higher redline, i think this motor is more than capable of 7000 rpms, i have been in that range many many times and with 76,000 miles on my 2k2 never had a single motor problem. after 6500 is where it sounds totally sweet with the intake, anyway.

Or maybe the tach isn't properly calibrated, as found by many others before. My fuel cut according to the tach is in the region of 6800-6900 RPMs, while my VAFC-II shows 6600 RPMs at the very same point.

And the Infinitis (depending on which ones you're referring to) having a higher redline have nothing to do with tach calibration.
