PCV BlowBy -- Oil Type

Most of us here use synthetic oil in our Max. I'm curious if oil type has anything to do with the PCV blowby our catch-cans are catching. What type (syn or dino) and name oil are you using? Please state that you do or don't have blowby.

I'm also curious if any of you are getting blowby with GC.

I use Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic.

i use AMSOil 0w30 Series 2000 and usually have to add a quart in between changes, (i change it at 6K-7K interval)

i've noticed it's getting worce, especially if i drive hard (110K on odometer)

Oil is oil (newtonian fluid) and will all be caught by the catch can...so oil type will NOT have a bearing on how much is caught.

Do you have any proof to back that up? Synthetic (specifically Mobil) is a thinner wt than it's comparable dino oil. Potentially, an oil with a heavier weight could reduce blow by.

I added GC to the discussion because it is a german formulation and said to be a heavier weight 0W30 than the identical Mobil product.

The relationship between shear and viscosity will still be the same regardless of weight.

Thicker oils generally have a higher viscosity, and thinner oils a lower viscosity. This is the most important property for an engine. An oil with too low a viscosity can shear and loose film strength at high temperatures. An oil with too high a viscosity may not pump to the proper parts at low temperatures and the film may tear at high rpm.
...
The weights given on oils are arbitrary numbers assigned by the S.A.E. (Society of Automotive Engineers). These numbers correspond to "real" viscosity, as measured by several accepted techniques.

This shows that an oil with a heavier weight is high in viscosity and less likely to shear. So, lighter weight oils can thin more than heavier weight oils (thus potentially having more blowby via the PCV).

I use GC in my vq35...i'm running the Husky blowby tank from Lowes...the $11.99 one...not the bigger $20.99 one

anyway, with mostly city driving...my tank reaches half full in approximately 400 miles....just to give you an idea how much GC is caught

I use Mobil 1 5w30 and don't have nearly the issues I had with the Mobil1 Extended Performance stuff.

I would lose about 1-1 1/2 qt every 2000 miles. Now it's back to normal. Maybe a qt every 3000.

I have no other proof other than the switch back to regular Mobil1. I used Castrol Syntec before and never had any issues.

I'm going to try GC at my next oil change and see what type of loss I get through the catch-can.
