Afcii True Or False

Ok i did my search on google but wasnt able to find anything that would help so i will ask you all.

At a local race shop yesterday the owner asked if i wanted to put a piggyback system in my 3.0. I told him that i have heard little to no true benefits to that mod unless you have a full header system or a turbo. to which he responded, that he had a book with all the codes and could get a 20 horse gain from just the basic piggyback. The book that he had was able to tell him how to set all the programable information and get the best gains. HE said that he had proven it on his 300zx.

So i know that there are some on the forums that really know there engine stuff and i wanted to know f this is a good investent for a power gain. Let me know what you think.

you need to have a dyno done with a/f to show if there would be a need for an afc. his 300zx was/is probably turbo and has more potential for tuning. with my old cattman y pipe, my a/f was almost perfect across the board (13:1). not until i went with headers did it go rich. unless youve got headers or some form of FI then he is just trying to sell you something.
now even in stock form, an afc can help but do not expect the results he stated or any where near it.

Yeah id check your A/F ratios first either at a Dyno or w/ a Wideband O2 Sensor and if you are out of tune then go pick one up.

see thats what i was told but i wasnt sure

i was under the impression that without having already done headers the afcII would not have a large effect. now i know that he is full of it.

thanks guys

How much gain you'd get from something like the SAFC or VAFC if you have no major mods really depends on how bad your a/f ratio is right now. I won't say that you'd see no gains, but you probably won't see the kind of gains he's talking about just from dyno tuning with an SAFC. He may not even be lying about his 300ZX, but as sloppymax stated, his Z may have been a turbo model, and his a/f ratio probably had more room for improvement across the board than yours does if you're mostly stock.

Sloppy and Spiro are right... it all depends on how bad your AFR is currently. Get on a dyno and find out what it looks like before deciding to get an AFC. Unless you know you're definitely going to need one down the road.

It's better than a repost though.

VAFC has more rpm spots to tune than SAFC.
