Gear Shift Question
Gear Shift Question
Ok mom just got a 2002 Maxima SLE And I noticed when the key is not in the car you are able to take the care out of park without pressing the brake. I have a 95 Maxima & you can not do this with mine. Is her car suppose to do this or is something wrong with it???? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated...
did u mean all the way like in reverse or just a but to the side cuz its normal for it to go to the side just not and lower then that
or like blue said check the shift lock
unless its a new option on the "SLE" lol jk

I'm not sure where you're shift lock is located on the 02 5.5gen, I know mine is right on the shifter plate just above the "P", if it is up, you can just push it down into place. May want to check with a 5.5 genner. Good luck Brianne, but the shifter should not be able to shift gears without the key in the ignition and turned to the acc position I believe.
OK I tried reseting the shift lock by pressing the button & nothing happen. I've read the whole owners manual and it says nothing about it except that it's not suppose to do it. So does anyone else have an idea??????? Or does anyone else's do this?
Does this look familiar
Have you tried this?
"If the vehicle is driven under extreme conditions such as excessive wheel spinning, subsequent hard braking, the fail safe system may be activated. This will occur even if all electrical circuits are functioning properly. In this case, turn the ignition key OFF and wait 3 seconds. Then turn the key back to the ON position. The vehicle should return to its normal operating condition. If it does not return to its normal operating condition, have your NISSAN dealer check the transmission and repair it if necessary"
Have you tried this?
Tried that also everything on the car works fine. There is only 30,000 miles on it. Suppose she'll have to take it to a Nissian dealership which she really don't won't to do. Thought I'd check here first for her. Thanks for all ya'lls help if ya'll have any other suggestions let me know.
there's a screw under a small covering on the shifter plate labeled "shift Lock" for the A/T maxima 02-03. You should be able to put a small screwdriver into the gap and pull the cover off that screw hole. I THINK it needs to be rotated a half-turn and you should regain the shift lock. It's typically disengaged for towing purposes. Let me know if this helps.
on mom's shifter plate she has the small covering which pops out but under that there is no screw it is like a button which can be pressed down. I've tried with the car on, off, with the brake pedal pressed, with it not pressed, with the car in ACC postion& so on by chance would that button happen to rotate?
No it won't rotate. It is likely that your shift lock solenoid is dead/ stuck. Part number is 34970-5Y710 list is 60.25. To check it, remove the cover plate around the shifter so you can see the solenoid and to gain access. Withe the ignition turned to on tap down the brake pedal while feeling/ listening to the solenoid. It should click every time you tap the pedal. Normally you can hear or feel the solenoid without removing the plate, but just to be sure i'd remove it. Good luck.

if she just got it the dealer shoudl cover it even if it is out of warranty. its called good faith.
Also, Vaporhead, there is no pressure on the shifter itself. its in the tranny and if it fails the car will roll, not shift out improperly. two different situations.

shifter at times is difficult to get out of park
I always use my parking brake and it makes no difference on an incline or level. The shifter sometimes is difficult to get out of park. I purchased the car used, it was a program car. I am sure they didn’t use the parking brake. Wonder if the shift lock solenoid sticks? Can you tell by removing the gray cover plate?
BLUEMAX: good to see some more in the area, i dont know about a AE meet, might be fun, but definately hit up the meets we have in the area, normally up near schaumburg.
regent: the shift lock solenoid is an electro-mechanical part. When it switches you can hear it, not loudly though. THe best way to test is to step on the brake lightly and find the point at which it engages and learn the noise. after that move the brake pedal quickly, it should engage at the same point. its hard to explain in words, try it out and you will most likely know what i am talking about pretty quick. it is not a common part to fail, no moreso than any relay on the car.
