Transmission Fluid Question

Hi everyone. I have an '03 Auto with 174k miles on it. According to the service records, the tranmission had been maintained properly before I bought the car. The fluid is currently a nice red color and the transmission shifts just fine, but I would like to keep it that way. I am debating switching to Amsoil synthetic but am not sure if that is such a good idea at this mileage. My question is whether or not I should switch to Amsoil now or should I just do a drop the pan service with regular fluid? Any thoughts?

Synthetic is a must! Stay with the Amsoil. Check the Lubricants section in the main forum page for others. Also, just "dropping the pan" only gets about 4-5 qts out, u still got about 4 left inside. Look in the "How-to's" sticky for the tranny flush write up.

I used Mobil as well. Tranny is nice and smooth.

I think Mobil or Amsoil will do just fine. Mobil 1 is cheaper and it's relatively available where ever, vs. Amsoil. I'm currently using Mobil 1, but thought about giving Amsoil a shot, but who knows, when it comes to it, I may be broke and stick w/ Mobil 1.

Chance is that you should never mix different syn fluid together.

So regardless of which synthetic I use, does everyone think it'd be okay to swtich to synthetic with such high miles? The mileage is my only concern about switching. I haven't decided which route of synthetic to go if I decide to switch. Thanks so far for the responses.

Syn ATF like Mobil1 is compatible with dino ATF say Nissan OEM, correct me if I'm wrong, but may cause problem when mixed with another syn ATF say AMSOIL. If you want to switch dino ATF to syn, you'd better stick with whatever you decided to use. Mixing different fluid type together is not good for your car.
