Could someone please recommend a code reader for an 03' SE Auto, and please include the price you paid? Information in FAQ's is limited, and there must be one many of you use that's not real expensive.

just bought me an actron cp9175.
their latest model for obd2, and cheaper than one of their earlier models
and is updateable through your computer

 

i like the one in autozone. it's free and fast!

Autozone is the best bet, but when the only local store starts to recognize you and will no longer "reset" without proof of repairs, your S out of luck.

 

I just bought a new code reader on ebay DT-610 i dunno the brand but it works fine with my 03 max. I paid 36$ shipping included to canada. Received and tested it today on the max (because of an ses light). I f you want I can send your the seller id(good reputation by his ebay score). It took 2 days to arrive (bought it on monday)

 

I'de like to get more information about how these units work. I'm thinking about purchasing the Actron CP9175. I understand that if your engine light is on, the scanner can tell you whats causing the light to go off as well as reset the light. Can the scanner also help with preventive mantainence. For example, will the scanner tell you of any problems even if the light isn't on? Like maybe if the car is making a sound or feels sluggish because of a problem but the engine light isn't on. Will the scanner still tell you of the issue?

Or will it strickly only read codes when the engine light is on?

 

Thats why you have / make friends with people that work there to reset your CEL.. my friend works at an Advance Auto parts, and i get my cel resetted like everyday, cuz i like my dash being clear

 

I have a CP9175, the cable to update the code's doesn't work, that has pissed me off big time since the beginning, so one in ten codes just says manucafcturer specified dtc, and I have to look them up in the FSM (or google if it's a non-nissan). I was at wall-mart today and they had a nice one for $100, I'm pretty sure it also lets you "veiw data" which is nice, with veiwing data you can set TpS sensors much faster, look at things like that, see rpm, battery voltage, short and long term fuel trims, o2 sensor voltages, maf flow, rpm, iat and water temp, and a few more. As for telling you whats wrong, no scanner will do that, you need to know how to accuratly diagnose the problem, a code never means "replace this part".

One good thing I will say about the cp9175 is that it is very durable, I've definitly dropped it from hood level on more than one occasion, and shut the cable in a car door a few times as well and haven't had a problem. Me personally, I could never have anything below that level, the CPxxxx below it just reads and erases codes but won't let you look at anything, if anything I am considering upgrading. Hopwever, if it failed me tommorrow and I needed another one asap, now that I have a laptop I would just by obd-II and consult cables off e-bay and use the laptop vs a scanner.

 

Thanks for the response. It sounds like its only use is when you have the engine light on.

 

Maybe it would be a good idea to create a new topic about this since someone resurrected a 2 year old thread. Scanners and their prices changed.
