HELP!! Acceleration gone!!

I don't know what's going on, but recently I changed my battery and now my car doesn't accelerate properly. When I floor it, the rpms go up to like 3500, but the car gains speed extremely slow. It makes this gargling sound during the slow acceleration and only gets to like 20-25mph. Even parked, if I push on the gas it makes that noise. If I easy on the gas it'll gain at normal speed, but its garbage if I floor it. Anyone have this issue or might know what is causing it. I checked my oil. Air filter was kinda dirty but I took it out all together to see if it would gain better with no luck. Can someone help me out please?

Whats up Sooner? Naw I had a 04, but that has been traded for my G35 Coupe. This question pertains to my 2000 Max.

Acceleration gone

Sounds like a MAF (mass air flow) sensor problem. It is located in the air intake and measures air flow rate, sends sigmal to ECM (engine control module). If it malfunctions, the engine goes into failsafe mode and will not rev above 2500-3000 rpm. Perhaps it was damaged or disconnected when the battery was replaced. Check engine trouble codes for info.

Thanks, I'll get that checked next I guess. The car hasn't thrown any codes I don't think. No check engine light at least. I hope it's not that cause I'm suppose to drive it back to GA this week. It seems to drive fine as long as I'm not trying to accelerate quickly. If I don't get it fixed I hope it can make it.

Pardon my ignorance, but what are the coils? Is there anyway to possibly clean the MAF. I pulled out my air filter and it was pretty filthy. I beat it the dust and dirt out a bit and it seems like it tried to improve. I'm going to put a new AF in today and see if that helps at all first. I really hope its nothing serious because i'm suppose to drive out tomarrow morning.

Coils are located on top of the spark plugs. If you don't have the updated ones, you're better off in replacing them. The original coils that came with the car are prone to go bad and are terrible. Cleaning the Maf won't probably do anything. In fact, I wouldn't even suggest in cleaning it. It's very sensitive and it's possible you might end up ruining it anyway. Replace the coils first and see if the problems go away. If not, buy a new Maf and replace the air filter (genuine Nissan). You'll definitely notice a difference once the Maf is installed. It may also be a good idea to get the ECU updated and flashed with the new Maf. Hope this helps any.

Actually, it's better if the filter is slightly oiled like the Nissan air filters. It traps more dirt. It's the cheap dry ones that allow more dirt to get through. I see that you have a 2k2. It's known that the 2k2-2k3 Maf's are extremely sensitive as compared to the 2k-2k1's.

I had the same gurgling sound a while back... It was a combination of the coils and MAF that was causing that (along with loss of acceleration).

If ALL you did was replace the battery then it probably ain't the coils or the MAF. Did you allow driving time for the "relearn". NEVER reconnect battery power and then immediately go for any "power runs". If it's just gutless and is not "missing" then it isn't the coils. A coil or coils that give you off idle performance issues will set a misfire code and the SES light anyway. If you haven't put in some "normal" driving time and cycles then try that first before panicing re the MAF.

Just had to say that those wheel look good on your car. I have the same set for sale on ebay, but I think if they don't sell I'll put them on my max, cause my chromes are starting to look bad.

^Thanks for the compliment! Yeah, those 18's really do complement the look of my car... Now if only I could get rid of the wheel gap I don't have... Yeah, I'm not the most meticulous when it comes to cleaning my car, so something low-maintenance is good for me.

The MAF's on the 2000 are notorious for going bad even with out a CEL. Mine went bad, with no CEL, with me just removing it from the car. I put it back in and that was it. Same problem youre having. They are cheap enough so I wouldnt even think of cleaning it, and like previously posted, theyre very sensitive.

I think it is great that so many people out there know about the ECU, etc. I would be lost without this site.

sounds like the wonderful MAF, for a 2000 it should be under a $100 to fix it
