O2 Sensor
O2 Sensor
I took my car in a few days ago to get the inspection done. After the guy told me I failed he said I had a bad O2 sensor. The fault code he gave me is P0138: O2 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank1 Sensor2). I took my car to Goodyear to get the problem fized and the guy told me if there was a problem with the sensor my SES light would have come on, and that my problem might be with the catalysts converter and sent me to a sketchy looking muffler shop. After a short deliberation I decided not to take my car there. Does anyone know what the problem might be with my car and what i should do about it?

If that guy was able to pull the P0138 code then why you dont think its not the 02 sensor? or wait for the SES light to come on and then go to autozone pull out the code and replace that sensor. by the way why did you need inspection when there was no CEL?
I'm almost certain you can have codes stored without the SES light coming on. My SES light was on for a good deal of time. Hooked up a code reader and got the same code you did. I didn't do anything to fix it but a few weeks later the SES light went off. I'm pretty sure the code is still there though. My guess is the on board computer got fed up with me and decided not to bother illuminating the SES light to save on bulb life
.
I'll try hooking up my code reader tonight and see if I can get anything. I'll clear them if I do and see if the SES light pops back on. Most likely this will happen. Mechanical problems never fix themselves.

Quick update on my experiment. I checked out my codes last night. While P0138 (02 sensor) is gone I still have the pesky P0440 (Evap) code stored. So yes, you can still have codes and not have an SES light. It probably depends on the seriousness of the problem. P0440 is not serious. It just means lower milage. Anyway, I cleared the code. Still haven't got an SES light but I haven't driven much.
