MAF cleaning

Hey guys, i know this has been covered, but i dont have the MAF cleaner aerosol spray available to me. What else do you think i could use? i saw electrical cleaner at the local Canadian Tire, would that be any good?

Thanks for your help

i would think a standard electrical cleaner would be ok (as its used on PC internals all the time), but i would double check just to make sure

I heard that those MAF cleaners work the same as spraying some gasoline! I might be wrong though!

I killed my MAF by using CRC MAF cleaner. I don't suggest cleaning it.

I'm sure it was already dyning/on its way out.

Mine isn't dead yet. Been 5k miles since I sprayed it.

Don't bother cleaning it, if its giving you problems then its time for a new one.

well i guess i was just doing it as some general maintenance. thought maybe my air/fuel ratio was a little messed up cause of a dirty MAF and causing some bad fuel consumption. Im only getting 17mpg (70% city, 30% highway). I recently seafoamed the car (it was at 15.7mpg before i did the seafoam treatment), changed the oil, changed the air filter, and put in Champion copper plugs. I was hoping that i would gain a little MPG by cleaning the MAF. I see everyone getting 19-20mpg + and i would LOVE to be at that. sigh...

The only cleaner you want to use is CRC Maf Cleaner or any other official maf cleaner. ( i dont know of any others.) Do not use Electric cleaner its not made for mafs and will hurt it most definately. And not all the time does cleaning it not help. Its a cheap thing to try rather than just buying a new one. And I have seen many other times personally a cars performance drastically change when cleaning the maf. so theres hope

I drive to NYC everyday and I get..... according to the computer 26.4 MPG - which i can actually back up - i do 450 miles every 3 days, if I'm easy on her I'll get those 3 days and have to fill up 15.5 - 16 gallons or so. If i'm not then its more like 2.5 days for 15-16 gallons....375 miles...

and I need to do plugs at least...2nd owner on car and had it since 60k miles. (now 93k in 11 months driving).

And yes - if I'm easy on her I can get 30mpg in it. 6th gear has plenty of acceleration for me :P

how can i back that up? (I already did above with the actual fill ups per miles driven) or how do i get that much mileage? (more highway driving than you might think - i stay in 6gear for much of my time driving)

I must have the freak Maxima then. Doing 75 mph on mostly hills and some steeper sections (WV) I was getting 29mpg (5 speed). We went from Allentown PA to Huntington WV on one tank of gas.

I could use a new MAF though, it has the hiccup at about 3500rpm. Cleaning it with CRC didn't do a thing.

I have cleaned GM MAFs with alcohol (isopropyl) for a very long time.

BUT... I haven't tried it on any other manufacturers MAF.

I am not saying rubbing alcohol would be good to use; just another product to think about.

Is there any regulations on shipping chemicals to Canada? I'm not sure what the procedures are but if you send the loot I would ship you a can of it. Just an option. Again you would have to find out what the guidelines are for shipping areosols.
