any harm done?

i have an 02 with autotragic, yesterday some kid in a ford f150 wanted to play around.. we were already moving so i dropped the shifter into 2 and was gone... is there any harm done by using the actual gear numbers with the auto? i dont let it get near redline, i know it takes a lil bit for it to shift itself.. thanks for any input

a. stop street racing
b. stop racing a truck

that being said, it wont hurt to do it once or twice (unless you downshift to 2 going 60). just dont make a habit of doing it. its an automatic...let it do its job and shift for you

It's a little hard on the torque converter, but not really too damaging to the geartrain or clutches.

Floor it. This will make th tranny go to 2nd if the speed is right. Then, when it's already in 2nd, shift the lever, and hold it to just before fuel cut, if your powerband supports it.

I try to save my brakes by at times downshifting manually from 4th to 3rd to 2nd. As long as you don't go into 2nd higher than 40-45 mph, the engine won't rev too high. I rarely do this for the sake of performance, however, as I find the auto to be perfectly willing to downshift and hold gears on its own (almost TOO willing, at times).

You're spending more on fuel costs and wear and tear than you are saving on brakes.

Its essentially the same thing you do with a manual trans, so the fuel usage is neglegible. There are only certain roads around where I live where I do this, so wear and tear really isn't a concern either.

if his foot is off the throttle, i dont think it will be using any additional fuel downshifting

I've been driving my autotragic this way since I acquire the max in 2000.

I never had a single problem with the tranny yet and still running very strong so it doesn't really hurd, unless you downshift from running 100 mph then the engine will hit redline really baddly but other than that you'll be just fine.
