crankcase vent hose question

I know what you're thinking.... already did a seach and found out most of my answers.

a few months ago i found a thread about someone asking about the purpose for the crankcase vent hose. For ***** and giggles I hooked up a oil catch can to see what coming out of there.

Your next question is why would someone do this? I was cleaning my TB one day and found it insanely dirty. I took a toothbrush to it and was just amazed on how dirty it was. So i figured there has to be a 'decent' amount of oil coming from the vent hose. Now it's a month later and my can is about 1/4 full of oil. My oil can can looks like it can hold about 20oz of fluid... just measuring the size, not saying it can hold that much.

Is this healthy to have this much oil coming out of this hose?

Thanks guys!

How many miles have been travled in during that month?

In any case, seems about normal. Mine gets quite full every 300-500 miles. (~ 1 tank)

Good point... i left out a few things.

I traveled about 1500-1800 Miles. I switched it from my PCV valve to the vent hose right after my oil change before Thanksgiving and all that traveling added to the miles.

I also seafoamed (probably doesn't matter) about 2 weeks ago.

Maybe it's nothing, but it just seems like a lot of oil mixing with air and going into the TB.

I'm just going to empty all the oil and put my catch can back to the PCV valve.

The amount of "backflow" from the crankcase vent is strickly a function of engine condition and how hard you drive the car. Manual tranny cars will tend to have more backflow as well.
