Mod note: Yes, a tire thread, but this is specific to 5th gen owners so can it please stay here?

Anyone out there own the Proxes 4 in the stock 17" 225/50/17 size? These must've become available recently because they weren't an option in '05 when I last bought tires. I'm looking to replace my Avon M550's which I loved but wore out pretty quickly (under 20k).

I like the fact that the Proxes 4's are 25 lbs. (2 lbs lighter than my Avons) and I know they've gotten high praise from many on the forum, including Irish who has run just about all the popular rubber.

Anyway, I'm in the dog house with my wife because my Avons didn't even make it 20k miles. What's your guess for treadwear on these P4's? I know they're 300 treadwear and Z rated, so I'm guessing around 30k is about all I can expect. Agreed?

ive had them for about 20K and even auto-crossed on them a few times. i have plenty of tread left

I've got it on my car for about 40k and still counting but need to replace in another about 2k miles.

Mine have 25K on them and are at 5/32. Last time I had them rotated I was told they could go another 10K or so. I plan on buying another set.

house, why not look into avid v4s? i have yet to drive them in the snow...but they have a 60,000 mile warenty on them if tire wear is a concern?

(and the proxis have been avalible since early 2006 at least)

Actually, that's currently my second choice but I'd prefer the Proxes 4 if treadwear were fairly comparable. Sounds like I could expect an extra 10-20k out of the Avid's...Now the question is if I mention that to the wife...

Same here.. i'm using 235/45/17 proxes 4 on 2k2 GLE rims

had them for 2+ years, 30k miles with decent tread left. I just replaced 2 proxes FZ4s (thats what i had before the 4s came out) last month and paid about 400 for both tires with the warranty. It was kinda pricey IMO, but i didn't have much choice and i was at town fair tire already.

how do the proxes perform in the winter? like snow and ice....coz the weather gets crazy here in Canada...last week was almost -50C...my poor baby froze...

DO NOT BUY THE TRACTION TA's

i had them on my last car (gtp) and they sucked hard in the snow...dry and rain were better than the worn pilot a/s's they replaced.

the avids are nice...but tend to have a soft side wall compared toe the factory tires (re90a's?)

and the rain traction (from a stop) can be a littly trick...driving is fine.

snow...havent tried it yet

Toyo Proxy 4's can be purchased from Treadepot.com. CAll them up and ask for Scott. Tell them to do better on the shipping cause you were looking at them before the new year (the prices went up after 2006) and he'll hook you up.

Yep, Edgeracing has the OEM size for $109 a piece. I have 245/45/17's on wider aftermarket rims and just absolutely love this tire. It's the best tire i've had in a long time. It has about 22k on it and tread has been holding up pretty well, i'd say it should last for another 20-25k under current driving conditions.

Cory, I've had 4's installed on my car since 2/20/06 and would definitely give these consideration for replacements. The ride quality and tread wear has really impressed me about these tires. Twice the tire of the Falken 512s, hands down.

i used to have a set of them on my old talon.


i currently have a set of goodyear rsa on my car now. they wernt as bad in the snow as i thought they were. ive had them on for about 12k now have a good amout of tread left, even thou ppl on tirerack said they only last about 15k

Holy crap! I was on the fences whether or not to go to 235/45/17 before, but now I'm definitely getting the Proxes 4's since I can get them in the stock size. Good find, housecor! My brother has them on his mini and they're excellent. He's put around 25k miles on them and they look a lot better than my Falken 512's do with 25k miles...

I have Proxes '4' 225/50/16's on my car and they were pretty good in the snow last year... I've had em since sometime last november ~ 15 months? And I beat the ever livin S**T out of them. Hard launches, burnouts, hard turns very often and I have about half tread left.

I'd definitely buy them again because what i love about them is that they are so "all-seasonal." They're good in the snow, good in the rain, and yet, on a hot summer day them suckers get very sticky. VERY good tire IMO.

I had my first run in the snow/ice with mine this week. 215/45/17 (on a SENTRA, guys, calm down). They were okay. As AS tires go, they performed as expected. Nothing like winter/snow tires, but not bad. They did not fee unsafe, but if I lived in the wintery wonderland of the maple Leaf, I'd look into a dedicated set of winter/snow tires, either to mount seasonally on your OEM rims, or on their own rims.

They're not advertised, but your local Discount Tire rep can usually special order them and have it in within a day or two.

They'll also pricematch online stores (they factor in shipping costs for online retailers though).

Quick question as i've always been curious about it. Would the Sentra's lighter weight have any negative impact on the amount of traction this tire would have in the snow?

Yes, but not as much as you might think. I also have a HLSD, which offsets the traction problem a bit.

I think that the weight difference is only about 400 lb, but with a shorter wheelbase.

Agreed......great tire, decent in snow, great in rain. Got mine for just over 500 all-in cost (mounted, balanced, taxes, disposal fees etc) at a local Tire Rack after the counter guy raved about them. A WHOLE lot better than the Goodrich TAs I had before....which in turn were better than the OEM Bridgestones (shudder).

Housecor I currently have a set of the Avid V4S and they are great in both dry and wet conditions. I tried them recetly in the snow and they performed above my expectations. I would definitely recommend them to someone who is considering them as a possible choice. And of course they are much better then the stock Bridgestone's the car came with.

Thanks for the input - I've gotta say there are plenty of glowing reviews out there for the V4S, perhaps even more consistently positive reviews than I've read for the Proxes 4's. Honestly, the 3 reasons I'm leaning to the Proxes:

1. Ride (Relatively softer sidewall than the V4S)
2. Tread pattern. The Proxes 4's just look mean.
3. Lighter by 2lbs./tire

However, the V4S does offer what appears to be 10-20k longer treadlife, superior snow traction, and better handling (from the stiffer sidewall). My #1 priorities are ride and straight line traction where the Proxes 4 excels. But both are great tires.
