Loud Bang, No More Go

Friday night is beautiful. I pulled out of an apartment complex in first gear, gave it a little gas, heard a bang, then had no more go. Car would rev and had clutch pressure, but wouldn't move. I had it neutral to push it and heard something a rattling noise coming from somewhere around (hopefully not in) the transmission case. It sounded like shaking a new can of Krylon, but a little deeper. Well, off to get it towed to get what I'm sure will be great news on Monday.

I love my maxima.

sounds less like a clutch issue and more like a transmission issue....ugh.

Well hope for the best. Something similar happened to a buddies Celica, and it turned out to be the clutch.

Damn, that sucks. Did you notice any symptoms beforehand? Best of luck to you.

Best case, broken axle $100 or less.

Worst case, differential, $1000 or more.

HLSD or open?

-Stock 2k, so open differential?
-Tow driver heard the rattling sound and put his money on the driver's side axle. That's the good news. Great news is that the axles were replaced in April and have a 12 month/ 12k mile warranty. Sucks that April was 28k miles ago.
-Car has 156k or 158k miles - I forgot. As far as symptoms, there were none. No noise, leakage from the boot, creaking, nothing.

Try autozone for a new axle. Usually a good price and it's not that hard to change yourself.

it has to be the clutch, cuz it happened to me when i had a 97 Legacy GT when I got it new, after putting 1600 miles and i heard a loud bang and the tranny won'[t shift anymore, it was the clutch throwout.

Good news...didn't run over a mini. Looks like either a motor mount or tranny mount failed, resulting in the axle failing. So looks like a minimum of 1 mount and an axle, but no clutch and no transmission. WOO HOO!!!

@mini...

Sounds like you need to place an order with Raxles.

Damn, I better check mine out so I can avoid this in the future.

No need to place the order w/ raxles - they replaced the axle under warranty and just made me pay labor. Motor mounts were fine....said everything seemed to be fine, but said something w/ the bracket/mount slid out place and that he couldn't remember seeing anything like that before. He was vexed. MORE GREAT NEWS....told me I need a new water pump, so it's off to my regular mechanic in the morning.

Damn dude how much is the labor on the water pumps, let us know cause i'm pretty sure its driven off the primary timing chain, deep in the motor. Do you do a lot of high-rpm driving cause ive heard our waterpumps dont hold up too well to that

Mechanic's charging $400 out the door. Estimating that's 3hrs. labor give or take. Don't do a lot of high RPM driving. Only times I get over 4.5k are the occasional on-ramps and pulling out of the toll plaza, but def. not every time, and don't dump the clutch. Thought about trying it myself, but it's a little chilly for that.

Youd have to take the timing cover off right, which is basically the entire left side of the engine?

More great news....rear main seal is starting to leak and got a leak around the power steering (nothing new, just not serious enough to replace). Gotta love my baby.
