For those considering GAB

I was bored this last Saturday and dug up ye old GAB thread. I followed instructions exactly as they are on this thread http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=266911. After install I drove around a little bit and WOW what a difference. The max sounds so mean now. Also with the paper filter i had in there, acceleration was fairly jerky....with the gab however, all jerkyness is gone and acceleration is nice and smooth and sounds great. So for anyone debating on whether(sp?) or not to do this mod I would say go for it...you won't be disappointed...although you might run through a tank of gas quickly because it sounds so good.

The differences were minimal to me... I used the coathanger with my FRAM (cheapy, not ToughGuard). I like the sound from about 3k-4k, but that's about it. Low end feels about the same or maybe slightly less and the top end has a little more (maybe). Regardless, it's a cheap mod to do and can be easily undone.

it was determined years ago on here that the GAB is a good cheap mod.

I was thinking about doing this, but every thread I read on the subject just talks about sound and top end gains. My concerns are about leaving the filter exposed (especially a K&N). More air = more dust, right? Won't the small amount of extra dust let in cause additional wear and tear after 100k miles? What about gas mileage? Low-end losses? Is this kind of thing practical for a daily driver... or just something to do when you go to the track?

It shouldn't...so long as you're using a good filter & changing/cleaning it properly.

As far as low end loss goes, I don't know if this has more low end loss than a standard paper filter, but I do know that this sounds amazing. Who cares if there is slight low end loss anyways...There is almost too much power at low end for the max being a FWD car...If I put it down from a stop the tires will spin incredibly easily..and from what I understand thats bad on the transmission anyways.

I've had mine ported and the top hacked off for over a year and a half now. doesn't get much more dirtier and no effects like engine BOOM. Clean the filter every now and again, and you'll be fine.

Hey guys, what do you think of this? Looks like it will hold the filter in place a lot better than my coat hanger. The install looks nice too. I think I might be ordering myself one of these.

That's a forum member. He posted this on here a few weeks ago. Definately better looking than coat hanger, and might be worth the $20 if you don't want to mess with bednging a coat hanger.

Only thought I have is that there is nothing holding the lower portion of the filter in place. Couldnt that allow the lower portion of the filter to edge away and allow unwanted air to pass under?

He posted that he made it and even has pics on his homepage, the same pics that are in the eBay listing.

Reason I ask is that I designed a version of the GAB thats not quite so "Ghetto." I designed it around the air box on my 01 Max. Just wondering if it would fit any other applications other than my year?

It's made of 1/8" galvanized basic wire (stronger than even a pretty diesel coat hanger and won't rust) and is welded for strength. Price is pry going to be around $25 shipped but could be as low as $20 depending on the demand. Anybody interested??

Pics...

The airbox is the same. (00-03)

There are extremely minor differences not worth mentioning, but for the record I am using an 00 airbox on my 03.

FYI, but the filter (not to be confused with the actual airbox) can be used in 95-03 Maximas.
