SE speedo cluster swap Q

I've got an 01 AT GXE (black) speedo with chrome rings and 68k miles and I found a pretty cheap SE cluster that's 01 AT, no TCS and 38k. Questions are:

1. Direct swap and if unsure, how I could determine?
2. Bad idea because the miles will now be off without setting to my current?
3. Can I bring in the cluster the dealer and pay the 35 to adjust?

Thanks much

I actually just thought of something. I don't even know what the gauges look like at night, just know they look nice during the day. Mine are just white numbers at night, what do the SE gauges look like?

I would also like to know the answer for this one the sticky on how to replace the cluster is not working.
I read that the mileage is in the actual cluster but can anyone confirm that.
If necessary to take to the dealer to adjust the mileage what the best thing to do bring in the cluster and let them swap it or i should put on myself.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i did the SE cluster swap on my 01 GXE......yes the mileage is stored in the cluster itself, luckily for me i found a cluster that was only about 3,000 miles off from my actualy mileage, so i cant really answer your questions on the dealer doing anything. you're best bet is to try and find a cluster with similar mileage (easier said then done i kno, but i did it, took me about a month or 2 to find one.) it is a very easy direct swap, whole thing took me about 10 minutes to complete. well worth it in my opinion, gauges white up white with a blue ring around the outside at night, doesnt look cheesey like those indiglos. just make sure if you dont have tcs now that you get a cluster that doesnt have tcs, otherwise the slip light will be on.....

the mileage will be fine...the odometer is simply a display of the number stored in the ECU.

Odo just shows the ECU mileage? That would be cool, but it seems contrary to what everyone else is sayin. I suppose I'll have the dealer set it so that at least I'm legit, feels better knowing I've earned those miles.

I wouldn't put the cluster w/ 38K in the car if you have any plans on selling it. Unless the dealer can roll ahead the mileage to your current mileage, the carfax will come back as odometer fraud, unless you can drive 40K miles before the car is next inspected. If its what you really want go for it, but your resale value will drop significantly if you try and sell the car. Try and find a cluster w/ mileage near 65-75K. Im sure theres some out there.

The actual mileage is stored in the cluster itself. There's a chip inside the circiutry that retains the mileage. The ECU has no bearing on the mileage. If you swap out one cluster and put in another, whatever mileage is stored within the cluster, that number will appear.

there have been many threads regarding this topic...every person that actually swapped their cluster says that the correct mileage was displayed after the swap.

Hmmm....I guess it depends on the year of the car. I have a 2k SE, and I plugged in a 2k1 GLE cluster just for the hell of it, and the GLE cluster's mileage popped up. Off topic, (just something to mention) but Nissan changed the faces in later 2001 and up models. The 2k models have 4 seperate individual faces (tach, speedo, fuel, and temp) while the late 2001 and up have all the faces as one unit piece (much harder to take apart...have to remove needles). Maybe that's why I had such an easy time replacing my LED's for the tranny indicators.

.... my mileage doesn't change on mine due to my tranny swap... but if ur planning on doing a cluster swap i would look into the i35 cluster with the electroluminescent gauge... they are very very nice!

So it might be an 00 only thing to carry mileage in the odo then? We may be getting somewhere now.

So does anyone know where you can get an 01 SE white face gauge cluster? I tried ebay and googled and could not find anything....I want to replace my boring 01 GLE cluster....Like soonerfan said the mileage is definetly stored in the ECU...I know several people who have replaced the cluster and like myself I put gauge rings and bezel on my display last year and the mileage "pops" back up because it is stored in the ECU...Respect sooners opinion because he knows what he is talking about....

When i get the cluster sometime next week i will take pictures of the gxe cluster install and the SE before and after the install to see what happens.

Best bet is to see if someone is parting out in the 5th gen classifieds (although I didn't see any gauges).

mileage is stored in the cluster!!!!!!! not the ecu........at least on 2k1's like mine.........whatever cluster you put in there the mileage on the new cluster will show up, your ecu has nothing to do with this

It has to be one way or the other. I don't know why Dave B would want my mileage/VIN for a new cluster if it was stored in the ECU, but what do I know, I've never swapped a cluster.

i did alot of research before swapping my cluster out....believe me, on 5th gens, mileage is stored in cluster. as for 5.5s well that could be different although i dont think so

I swapped my 2k GLE cluster (build date 12/99) out with a 2001 SL cluster (build date was circa 12/00). When I first got the SE cluster I plugged it in to see what mileage was on there as the seller wasn't quite sure...just knew that it had more than what was on my car. It showed up as different than my stock GLE cluster. Herego....the mileage is stored in the cluster on both 2000 and 2001 models. 2k2 and 2k3 models could be different, but I am not sure.

Yes..you can have a dealer or Dave B. re-adjust, calibrate the mileage. If you swap a cluster out and don't do this and your mileage is very different you could end up with issues when you sell the car. I forget the specific item they call it from the DMV, but it is something about correctional mileage, etc. That pretty much puts the car at a salvage title.

releasedtruth you should check with Dave B and see if you can send him the SE cluster to get adjusted.
