MAF dead?

my friends 2002 maxima (just z33 plenum swapped) was driving and he says he floors it to pass someone and all the sudden the car lost all power, rpms dropped and he pulled over. We thought a vacuum hose popped off but couldnt find any loose. When he tried to start the car it would die out almost immediately after idling really hard. I unplugged the MAF and it idled perfectly fine, so we drove it back (doesnt go above 2500 of coarse).
He was running the car without a filter for about a week and there was like...a hair on the sensor when we pulled the MAF out and some pollen. I cleaned it the best i could but it didnt make a difference.
So the question is, is the MAF fried or what...and what could have caused it?
thanks...

Running without a filter wasn't too bright. No CEL?

It was a temporary thing because the neck pushes the tb so far into the side of the bay there wasn't room for a filter.
But that's really besides the point, I am trying to decide if I need to buy a new maf for him right now or if there's another solution.
The cel has been on due to the vias disconnected so we don't know if a new one is in there and haven't tried to limp it down to the auto store to get it checked.

I don't know what to say except you can't treat these engines like you're running a lawnmower. Get the codes and go from there.

Ok thanks...I guess.
Don't think the motor was harmed however, just asking about the maf.

I'm sure mechanically the engine is fine. It's the damn technology that bites you in the butt.

check the voltage and make sure it's in range as per the FSM.

Everything looked okay on the connector harness, but the car doesn't idle so we can't check anything while the car is running ...

If it doesn't idle, you have an air leak somewhere.

It idled fine before the maf blew out.
I'm about to just buy a new maf I can't think of anything else it could be. Maybe the hair connected those piece of metal in there and cause some kind of witchcraft act.
