Clunk in the rear

So, ever since it got cold (not that I think this has something to do with it), Something in the rear end of my clunks when I go over bumps. It kind of sounds like a socket wrench banging against the spare tire well, but this isn't it. I actually took everything out of the trunk of my car thinking it might have been something rolling around back there, but the car still does it. I thought maybe it was the jack, but it seems bolted in pretty tight. I have to say this is really annoying, and I'm wondering if anyone else experiences it. If so, any ideas on what it is? It's not always there, sometimes I can go over bumps smoothly, other times it makes a real loud clunk, sometimes two consecutively.

I have the same thing, what noise does the rear make when it bottoms out? I have progress with illuminas on 4/4 without cut bumpstops, also i think possibly my exhaust could be hitting the supports...im on the original hangers

Sorry to jack your thread but we may have the same issue.

I don't know what it is..when i go over a rough section and after its over it still hits like the piece is still moving whatever it is.

Where your B pipe and rear-section meet, the solid axel is being hit by the exhaust. Move the muffler around while you are under there and see if that's it.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Mine was banging in the rear last summer. The muffler junction was giving up right around the rear axle.

Try taking your back wheels off and make sure all the bolts on your brake assembly are tight.I had the same problem on my 96 max but couldn't figure it out. Might have been the strut mounts. Just got an 03 about a week ago and had a similar noise. Took it to the dealership to be serviced, asked them to check it out thinking it was serious and got charged $90 for diagnostic fee when i just could have done it myself. Dam!
