Suspension Opinion

My father needs new suspention on his 01 Maxima GLE. He wants something that is going to give it an, "as close to stock" ride feel but dropped just alittle. No more then an inch. Wanted to know everyones opinion. Should he do shocks/springs(if so which setup) or just go with coilovers( which ones). He doesnt want to spend more then about 900-950 for the setup. Please leave me your opinions...thanks

I am currently riding on MaxSpeeds and Tokico HP's. A lil' less than $400 total cost. I installed myself.

Stock like ride, 1.4" front/1.3" rear. Couldn't be happier.

Only other springs you'll find that will lower car very little and keep stock like ride are H&R and Tein H-Tech.

To this, you are probably going to have to go with stock struts and springs, especially considering it's a GLE. Just about all other after market stuff gives a slightly more... to a much more stiff ride than stock. Unfortunately stock stuff will not lower your dad's car. I just replaced my struts and springs on my '01 GXE with Nissan oem parts and they actually raised the car 1/4 inch. My car had 105K miles on it however. FWIW, consensus of what I've read is that Tokico Blues are closest to stock ride and feel of all available struts. Here is another good link:

So I guess that's how much the springs settled over time. Interesting...

The closest to stock ride is Maxspeed springs (which are linear, like the stockers) with Tokico Illumina struts (which are adjustable and ride like stock at the "3" setting (1-5).

H&Rs are also similar.

H-Techs are cushy, but are much lower and don't have as much travel (and can bottom out)

Eibachs and all the rest are stiffer and will not ride like stock, nor will coilovers, generally.
