Water in trunk area..

I keep getting water leaking in through my truck every time it rains. It an 01 AE Max. I do have the carpet removed from the trunk and tried to put hose water around the outside trunk area and I was inside with a flashlight looking for any leaks. Found very little around the tail-lights. Does anyone else experience this problem.

The musty and mildew smell is killing me!!!

I don't have any experience with trunk leaks, but... Did you notice any water from any other areas? You can try resealing around the taillights to see if that helps any. I'd recommend the Nissan headlight sealer (black rubber-like stuff) for the job.

Yea, no water anywhere else. I don't think atleast.... I planned on taking the tail-lights out and sealing around the lights with black silicone and on all the weld joints between the metal.

It's coming from either one or two areas. Either the lights or up top past the gasket, I would suspect the tail lights first esp if you removed them to install aftermarkets. Try the waterhose trick again, spray directly on the lights with pressure and see if any gets in. If you find them to be th problem the silicone gasket can be bought from Autozone at a decent price.

Great.. the lights are the stock AE lights and never removed to my knowledge, but I will try the gaskets for the lights. And the silicone gasket is called??? (tail-light gasket?) Thanks

Hey, can you tell me how to post a pic. Installed all my springs/struts, and wheel/tire package and want to show all that helped with my questions.

I also have the same damn problem with my 2001 AE, haven't really tried to troubleshoot it yet though, let me know if you know where the leak is coming from. I'll try to find it when I have the time.

I have an '02 that I swapped the clears out for '00 GXE reds. My passenger side trunk would get wet after a wash or rain. I finally found out that when I swapped tails, the seal was not properly set. Originally thought it was because there was a crack in the taillight causing, but I replaced the taillight and it still got wet.

I noticed that there was a sligh indention in the body not allowing for a tight seal. Possibly from a minor fender bender (I bought car used). I tapped out the indention and reseated the taillight. Seems to have stopped the leak. No more water in trunk.

Check for imperfections in your body near the taillights from possible parralel parkers who bumped you or from previous minor fender bender type accidents. Could have caused the seal to not sit properly around the lip of the body and the taillight assembly.

Hey thanks. I did a little more trouble shooting and it appears the water is coming from the driver side tail light. I have to pull it and check the seal.

It might be the two rubber seals in the trunk. (remove spare, will see two circular rubber seals) I had the same issue and found these to be reversed, bought the car used last year.

All of the water is accumulating around the spare. I found a pool the last time I checked. I drained and put the seals back on...same problem.

All you had to do to fix this was switch the rubber seals? Did you buy new ones at all? Is it still happening?

Thanks!

I do not suggest a silicone sealant to seal the taillights to the car, as it is a PAIN to remove if you ever need to replace/repair the lights, or for the body shop if you get into an accident. Get the butyl-based seal from Nissan and do it right.

YOO! I have the same problem and have had this issue since owning my max. I've thrown out my trunk carpeting and floor board. I've since purchased a new carpet but its still in the box.

I purchased the car used and I think it has been in an accident before me. The body shop I took it to recommended getting in the trunk with a flashlight while someone pours water over the car from the outside to trace the source of the leak. Unfortunately, I don't have that type of time. I did trace the trunk groves and found a small crack which I sealed but I don't think that is the main source. Also, check the bolt holes around your spoiler. I think I am missing the rubber seal for my spoiler.

Argh!

Found a nice puddle in my spare area and in my jack/tools pocket on the side. Both of my taillights are cracked from the autobody's attempt to remove them. They got me new ones, but those haven't been put on yet. Carpet molded as well as my djfrestyl trunk floor kind of got ruined. Really pissed off about it. So most of you say it should be that taillight spot? I'm going to jump in the trunk while my friend sprays the car. I'll report back.

Define very little..? And if that isnt the main area its entering from it may be from the wheel wells !! I had huge water problems in my trunk.... and...once i determined it wasnt the rear end( tail lights etc)...i found it was the wheel wells rotting out and shooting water in while driving.....

Poor seal around the trunk lining, tail lights, and the wheel wells. Check these things.

I had the same problem with water accumulating in my spare tire. When building my system set up I had to beat the spare tire spot down. To keep the water from building up and ruining my box I drilled holes on the floor and wrapped my box in a plastic bag.

Point is... drill a hole in the floor and the water will not accumulate. Check the above to try and find the source.

Had the same problem with my 02, except I know exatly where it is coming from. Around the trunk seal, some one tried to hide a battle-axe shaped gash with a putty/epoxy and painted over it with touch-up. They didnt do a very good job because the trunk was still wett, I thought my spare was going to be rotted (bought the car used, dealership said they fixed it, again), so I just bough some GE clear silicon caulk, (I'm biased though, I work for them) and sealed it myself. For good measure, I did the whole trunk, because I hate water in a car....

I know this is an ancient thread, but I just had the same problem last week. Last year the Max was hit and had rear bodywork done. The body shop was still on the hook for taking care of any issues. Last week, for the first time in ages I took out the trunk carpet and board to vac under there and found the "swimming pool" around the spare. For all I know there was a giant ice cube in there all winter!! They took it for a half day, ran the showerhead over it and found the tail light leak. They said it's common for these Max's seals/adhesive to let go back there. Glad it was an easy fix and at no $$$$ cost.

Glad it worked out. Just more proof that the tail light seal is always the culprit.
