Okay, last time I was here, there wasn't a book worth of stickeys telling you to do this, ask here, go there, don't say this without saying that, I mean, lets keep it simple...

Now, my question... I own a '95 GLE with an auto trans, and I have had to replace it twice (on third trans now).. I have 3 friends who bought Maxima's because of mine. One of them a 95, other a 96, and the other a 92 or 93. All of them have since had to replace their trans, and my old boss had a 91, that he had to replace the trans in 3 times. (all autos)

I want to keep my '95, but I am looking to buy a 5th gen within the next 2 or 3 months. There is obviosly a problem with the pre '96 trannys in Maxima's, I just want to know, if this is still the case with the 5th gens.

Please, don't flame, I'm just asking. I hope I posted in the right place, and I hope the isn't an dead horse I'm beating, but I haven't been here in around two years.

First off, I owned a 96 which was a 5 speed and put 190k on her and never had a tranny problem. I am a firm believer that a manual transmission will usually last longer (except the clutch perhaps) than an automatic. Buy yourself a stick and you will be much happier.

My '95 has 412,000 on it right now never a single engine prob, and belive me, I've RAN it.. I would of thought thats why I tore my trans up, except for all these people I know having the same trouble. I'm not really into a stick though, because I'm one of those -multi task - drivers Seriously though, I'm just wondering, I don't want to have to go though all this again.

BTW, I'm just going to have this one for crusing and what not, I'm not going to be ******* it.

Based on my research before I bought my Maxima (an 02 SE), it's pretty well known that the engines on the Maxima's will go forever but the transmissions need some TLC. Point being, if you take care of it (or it was taken care of before you bought it), it will last a while. The transmission is really the only part of the Maxima that got some negative marks in Consumer Reports and to be honest, it was that way for the Toyota's and Honda's as well. My conclusion was that the major imports have great engines but only average transmissions and you must take care with them.
