bad tire day

So um... I was driving to work Friday morning and someone honked and told me something was wrong with my left rear tire. I figured it was a flat so I started pulling off the freeway when suddenly it sounded like an explosion combined with a bunch of flapping.

defective tire? sabaotage? road debris? who knows really.

careful driving fellas!

Sorry to hear but glad it isn't any worse.

The wheels are Enkei RP-f1 IIRC.

At least someone was nice enough to let you know something was wrong with your tire. But what a way to start the weekend.

I'm curious as to how the tire looked before it went out.

Yes, they are Enkei wheels... special order.

O_O Wow... at least there was some sidewall left to somewhat protect the rim...

What kind of tire was that?

tires are Falken Fk-451's, which are now replaced by the new FK-452.

Luckily the rim looks okay so far, I haven't taken it off the car yet. It separated perfectly from the bead on both sides.

And no the tire is definitely NOT stretched... its a 275/35 on a 18x9.5 inch wheel. The fronts are a different story

Damn, good thing it just the tire though.

I picked up a nail in my tire yesterday, I hope the same thing doesn't happen to me.

Darn, glad you're okay!

Interesting to note though, as i was researching tires the past two weeks i came across another car forum with a user posting pics of the same exact failure on his 451's. I only took down notes on the pros/cons of tires though, can't recall anymore which forum i saw that post in.

yikes! Well I didn't replace them with Falkens so hopefully it won't happen again in this lifetime.

morpheus: as for the tires, hehe. Thats 0.5 inches wider per side, per tire ... just a wee bit

culprit found: 4-5 inch nail inside the remains of the tire tread and some tears.

e-brake cable is toast, sheet metal is bent, some plastic covers missing. But the wheel survived without a scratch!

lost faith in the company.

A friend's FK-451 just came apart like mine on the highway a few days ago also. I believe Falkens are made by Yokohama, so i'm not buying those tires also.

I'm pretty sure it's Falken/Sumitomo/Dunlop. I had no idea Yokohama was involved with them.

wheel lock > me

I didn't have them with me on the car so I couldn't put the spare on.

It appears that the problem was isolated to the 451 model...

Most important part. Screw the functioning brake and sheetmetal, as long as it still looks cool.

lol...

Falken 512's All Seasons FTL

I have some Riken tires right now. It was the only thing available but the tread pattern and specs looked good so I opted for those for now.
