My '03 is whistling under acceleration. Any ideas?

My Max is totally stock. It has about 45k miles on the odo, and I've had it for about 4 years (bought new).

Lately, when I push down on the gas, a whistling noise comes from the engine; it sounds like a muffled turbo more than a "whistle" I suppose.

Any ideas? Thanks!

There are a few threads on whistles but most are with Intakes. It sounds like a vacuum leak.

Tell your friends you had a turbo put in.

j/k, yeah if you did nothing to the intake or air filter than its probably one of those small vacuum hoses leaking/came off

FWIW, 03's don't have any vacuum hoses connected before the throttle body, unile the 95-01 VQ's. 02/3 have just the PCV breather.

Inspect the lines in and around the intake as well as the IM.

Resurrecting dead thread...sorry

I really hate to resurrect this old thread, but I'm having the EXACT same symptoms RichP had. Rich-did you ever figure out the source of the problem? Was it exhaust? I have inspected all vacuum lines, resealed the upper im and replaced the PCV valve and vacuum line attached to it. Still no change, still a "turbo" sounding whistle when I accelerate, increasing in noise with increased revs. Any one have this problem? My car is 100% stock and has 120k on the clock. HELP PLEASE!!! If I wanted to sound like a ricer, I would have bought some crappy Honda...

Check your flex section on your exhaust for leaks...in all seriousness. I've got headers on my car, and the flex section is cheap compared to the OEM one. That's beside the point, but what I'm trying to get at is that the gaps in the flex allow some exhaust to leak out, which makes my car whistle under heavy load. I can see where a hole in the flex would do the same.

What you say makes sense, especially because I live in OH and got the car from Chicago (even deeper in the "rust belt"). The exterior excaped any major rust issues, but my exhaust looks like it was washed with salt on a daily basis (muffler is VERY rusty for an '03). I haven't looked at the exhaust other than the obvious where the muffler is visible, so I'll start by inspecting the flex pipe tonight and post my find. Thanks!
