HEAVY Clutch

I am looking at a 2002-2003 Maxima SE with the 6 speed manual tranny and the clutch was HEAVY. it felt like a racing clutch. is this the stock clutch on the car? or do you guys think it was an aftermarket one?

So this is what we had to wait for?

Only one true way to find out if it's aftermarket or not. Why not ask the previous owner?

this kind of has to do with driving a stick? someone told me that if you could drive a 6spd maxima that then you can basically drive anything. that statement sounded totally stupid because they make it seem like its a ferrari or something with a really hard to drive clutch. i went from a cable trans on a 88 civic to a hydro trans on a maxima. i really didnt have a hard time at all. ive been driving a stick since ive had my first car so i guess some level of experience comes into play. the guy that made that commment had a 6th 6spd before he sold it. the only thing that i dont like is how quickly the rpms drop due to the "throttle by wire" system. now irish you've auto-x your maxima and i dont think you've ever had any problems. also you said that 90% of the time you heal toe and that youve only replaced one clutch so far and that was on your acura. have you tried to heal toe on a 02 max? does it feel any different that your maxima? ohh btw i dont agree with the hard to drive statement.

do a little bit of research and try to see if you can get a hold of the previous owner. thats probably your best bet. see if you can find any paperwork w/ their names on it and try to contact them. i know it sounds like a lot of work but maybe you'll learn more about your maxima. just a thought.

I've driven the 6spd and the clutch feels just like mine. It's the shifter that is different. I used to hate the Maxima's clutch (long throw, and heavy) having come from a 5sp Accord coupe and a 5sp Integra...both of which have fairly light clutches. I'm 100% used to it now, and the only time I notice how heavy it is is when I'm in a traffic jam for an hour or more.

what do you guys mean by a heavy clutch? ive heard the term used before and never really understood what it meant? what does a heavy clutch feel like? is it really firm like were it puts tension on the left leg? everytime i hear heavy clutch i think of the mustangs and there really stiff clutch and how engages quickly.

Either it is something you can live with or not. Go drive a couple of other 6psd for a comparison.

In any event, if it is really hard, it could be a bad throwout bearing and to fix that, you have to pull the tranny so you are looking at a full clutch job.

thanks for giving me a real answer.

i dont know if you guys are blinded because you guys have a high post count or some of you are just mean, in order to make a thread as a new member you have to have 15 replies. after i met that requirement, i searched and could not find the answer. how could this have been answered in the FAQ? it is not. i followed the rules. as far as im concerned, all you guys are doing is flaming my post. this had nothing to do with a newbie post or any of that bs. i really thought forums were places for information, not a place where people with a big post count can try to bully or ***** new members around to quitting.

Actually, most of the posters gave real answers.

Because of past history where people come on to the site and ask "what's an intake and what's the best kind" people tend to be a little harsh on new posters. Don't take it personally, just search first.

Good luck buying a maxima.

Thats a decent deal...I'm used to the clutch on my 2k1 5 speed, however my buddy has a tC and that feels a lot easier to push with a shorter throw than mine. Also another friend has a 97 jetta, still easier. I can drive it and shift while only pushing the clutch to the disengagement point by now but every time a friend drives my car its, "wow dude youve gotta push your clutch in so far to shift, all the way to the floor!" etc. that sort of thing.
