Ive lost 5th before due to the bolts not being tight enough that hold the tranny to the engine. I would also check your linkage and see if you can shift it into 5th with the car off.

for the synchros. Happened to a 1990 Saab 9000S I used to own. The good thing is that the car is still driveable, the bad thing is you never know when the next gear(s) will go out. Have it looked at ASAP.

Synchros would require opening of the transmission and is very costly (depending on shop but most cost a lot). The cost is mostly labor though, if you are good with tools, have lots of patience and can follow a service manual you should be able to tackle the job, thats the way I learned to service transmission. But if your not comfortable you can shop around for prices. I would make sure that its 100% sure its the synchros though. Its hard to diagnose through the internet.

Have you grinded 5th alot? Id imagine the 5th gear synchro would be last to go, seeing as the 1-2-3-4 synchro are used a lot more. and you dont normally shift fast into 5th gear..well atleast i dont, dont race people doing 130+ mph lol..

Anyways it sound like it could be internally related seeing as you can get it in while the car is off but not on.

Synchros are expensive and require the whole tranny to be dissasembled. If i were you, id get another low mileage unit from the wreckors or off the org. Cheaper initially, but in the long run who knows. whenever you get anything from teh wreckors you have no clue what condition its in unless you tear it apart, and if you gunna do that may as well rebuild the original unit.

Try a transmission flush and see how that goes.

well before i tear into anything i'm going to try the small stuff first. i havent grinded fifth hardly at all! i can get it into fifth gear when the car is eaither on or off, its just when im driveing and i put it into fifth nothing happens, i can rev the engine, watch my rpm's go up but it acts like its just at idle.

honestly your better off replacing the tranny with a used one w/ low miles. the cost of having a shop replace the syncros maybe double the cost of a used tranny. plus while your at it, you might as well upgrade the clutch at the same time if you haven't already done so. i would call around to different yards to find one or see if anyone is parting out/selling their car/tranny. if you do end up replacing the tranny, take some pics of the inside of the oil one for the .org to reference from. good luck.
