Car doesn't drive straight over bumps, pulls left or right......

Hello, first off thanks for any help you could give me.

The problem: on the freeway when i drive over humps and what not it seems to pull for example: left if I drive on the left side of the hump and visa versa. So this feels like a problem because if there are a fair amount of bumps my car tends to pull left, right, left, right, etc. Almost feeling like I'm loosing control. My alignment is perfect, when there are no bumps on the road it drives smooth and straight. Does anyone have any idea what I check?? anyone with a similar problem?? Thanks again.

Check your tires for uneven wear, it could be you need an alignment.

but car drives in a perfect line when i let got the wheel on an even surface. so how could it be the alignment? As for the tires, I just rotated them last weekend and they were fine. I was thinking more on the lines of the control arm....but what do i know. thanks for the reply, any other suggestions??

my 03 se also does the same thing. i thought it was because of the sports suspension. before having the tires rotated, did you have this problem.

please post if you find a solution.

Jack up the car and put each hand on the very top and bottom of the tire... try to push/wiggle to see if there is any play. If so, ball joint needs replacing which is part of the LCA assembly.

Whats your suspension set up?

If you are lowered enough it could just be bump steer.

im lowered but not much, H-tech and 3 setting for front and back. i do have 19's, maybe that's why i feel it more but still! i dont feel it should do that, it fairly dangerous that's why i bring it up here. Ill try the ball joint test this weekend. from what i remember though i think it was good. thanks for al lthe replies. am i one of the few that experience this??

umm id have to say yes i did, BUT not as bad i guess, that's prob because of road conditions. but yeah i did have this problem before, also from what i can remember i had this problem on my previous set of tires as well.

When your car is "slammed" it changes the geometry of the suspension in such a way that when you hit bumps in the road it radically changes how the car handles bumps in the road... Instead of just going over them, your car will bump left to right over them, feeling like you are out of control.

Thats how I can explain bumpsteer after an entire bottle of wine...

how big are your tires? when i had 18's with a 245 i noticed it alot but now that im back to 16's its gone.... the wider the tires the more likely you are to get pulled off like that

this is common for directional tires. Some do it more than others. IIRC it's called "groove tracking" or something like that.....

fix: keep your hands on the steering wheel and stop text messaging.

I had the very same issue that completely gone after replacing wide and
old tires (245 Michelin Pilot from previous owner) to the stock size (225).
Hope it helps.

LOL +1 on the wheel holding, BUT i dont feel it needs to be held VERY hard.

How can one correct bumpsteer?

My tires are not stock but common 235s.

if your steering wheel is "wondering" you have a caster issue. It's part of alignment. However that is not adjustable so by you changing your geometry of your car you have influenced steering angles. Also shock compression ratios could cause it to steer after bumps but that would be mostly to the weak side so i am inclined to day alignment issue after the car being lowered. New they don;t do this

well, technically....it can be adjusted using offset LCA bushings (recently done by a member here)....but that's a bit more work and suspension tuning than the average joe here probably wants to do.
