698 dollars to fix wheel bearings?

My 02' SE makes a grinding noise on the front driver side at speeds over 40mph. I took it into the dealer and he told me that I had to replace the wheel bearings ($462) and the hub ($236) so the problem doesnt come back. This price sounds way high and I have no choice but to pay it because I'm going on a trip. The price inculdes parts and labor already. Are these prices correct?

The grinding noise... its not the brakes worn down? A bad bearing will make a humming sound. You say its on the driver side. If you put a load on the driver side and take a right turn the sound should get louder. Is this the case. he is a mechanic and has looked at the car so i would say he prob is right about the prob. The price unfortunately may be right as the parts for these foreign jobs isnt cheap. Can you get the parts and put them in yourself?

I think the price is on the high side. 2 hours labour would be the most. Is the hub damaged? Is the price for two bearings? Get a second opinion. I would take it to a busy local garage and if possible wait for the car till it is done. If you are waiting it is a little harder for them to say it took 3hr when you know the car was in for about a hour.

Wheel bearings

I replaced my wheel bearing in my front driver side wheel a few months ago. The finial price for parts and labor was 200 something, and about 2 and a half hours of labor. When mine went bad I had just got back from a long trip. I would reach about 35 in speed and I would hear a humming sound not a grinding sound. Call around to get it fixed, and Don't take it to the steelership they just want your money. Have a good Trip

RIP-OFF. I doubt you need the hub if you just noticed and I wouldn't go to the dealer for anything but touch up paint.

Ok I've posted in another thread but no replies so I'm gonna give it another shot cause I've gotta do this on sat. my right front bearing is bad and after I got same quote from the stealership of $460's just for the front bearing I decided to buy the part and called a local shop and they said they would insert/compress bearing into hub for $25, my question is do I take the knuckle out and take it to the shop and they will take the hub out and replace the bearing and then put it back and all I got to do is put it back in the car and presto?

pretty much... 25$? thats a good deal. I found a bearing for 75$ online - dont bother with the dealer.. If you live somewhere that gets rough winters, watch out for the circle clips that have to removed in order to extract the bearing... took me hours to get those bastards out when I did it a month back...

i have a question guys....

its weird but AFTER i changed my front driver side bearing and spindle and all that stuff i got on the highway, a few days after...and around 60-70 mph i kept hearing a hummm, and i could feel something touching something, i could feel it on the gas pedal, and it was coming from that side....

what could cause this weird hum at those speeds after i just replaced the bearing?
cv joint?

shouldn't be cv joints. sign of bad cv sounds like knocking when turning.

getting any rubbing issues w/ the brakes maybe?

Just got mine fixed at the same cost. I didn't have choice on the hub because the dealership said that it was rusty and bearing wouldn't fit right. I forgot ask them if I could keep the two parts just so i could post some pics. Cost for repairs is high. I needed my car and some of the other shops were a little busy so I had to bite the bullet. But at least I have that peace of mind.

I just replaced my bearing, bought oem part on ebay for under $50 bucks, Called a bunch of local shops where I work so I can drop it off in the morning and pick it up after work. This shop I took it to charged me about $150 for labor and I also had to replace the hub, total cost $360 and that's including alighment a lot cheaper than what the stealer were charging me $465 for labor and alighment and not including parts because I told them that I had the bearing.
