rebuilt trans 6 times, in 8 months

In janurary 3rd gear and o/d went missing in my auto.. Paid 1200 for it to be rebuilt.. Less than a week later, reverse acted as first gear, Neutral acted as 2nd gear and in park it would try to go in reverse.. Got it rebuilt again under warranty.. same thing Happened again.. Took it back to the same shop for the third time and rebuilt again and the same thing happened..

Well got my money back and took it to another respectable shop.. Same exact thing after 3 times their.. Got my money back once again..

Now at this 3rd shop they are saying that the trans housing may be warped and that it may be not be keeping pressure or something.. Has anyone had experience with the trans being warped or even have a hairline crack? I know i can just get a used transmission for alot cheaper and i'll probably go that route but I'm just wondering whats goin on with this one

Ive personally never heard of the housing being warped.......but anything is possible. The hairline crack is definitely possible, but you should notice the wet spots in the driveway, and the shop should be able to see the moisture from the leakage.

On the other hand, to toss out my $.02 I would make sure that the shifter linkage isnt miss-alligned, stretched, or just loose. This could make you think that you are fully in one gear according to the indicator in the console, but in reality the tranny is caught between two different gears at once and is just burning clutches.

Hopefully everything works out for you though..........

i'd buy a junkyard tranny and install it yourself...or do a swap...
sorry to hear about your bad luck bud. i'v always prefered junkyard trannies over rebuilds.
good luck!

You figured after the 2nd or 3rd time that it's time to get a NEW tranny. Clearly they don't know how to rebuild...

I disagree, bad transmission rebuilders SUCK. I had a couple Taurus SHO's before my Maxima. The ATX in the SHO is known to have a problem with the planentary gears failing because they don't get enough fluid. The rebuilder I chose immediatly suggested the "Trans-Go" Improver kit and suggested a shift kit (mid-level springs) for a faster shift. I personally loved the way the tranny shifted, smooth at part throttle and very firm at full throttle.

As far as tranny rebuilders go check with AAA for recommendations and visit their shop, if the shop is a disaster chances are your tranny will be also.

If you buy a used tranny, have it checked over before installing and consider the improver kits and maybe a shift kit. Talk to your rebuilder, a tranny set up for drag racing with full pressure tire-chirping shifts is not so great in rush hour traffic so know it is going to be set up.

just my .02.

I had the tranny done in 2 shops with a different tech each time.Had a shift kit and a cooler put in the first time around.

If the tranny goes out on my beater Ill hit up the salvage yard.On my maxima Id buy a new one.

Why rebuild. Just replace the thing. That's what most shops would do anyway. Had my tranny go bad on my Jetta and got a junk yard tranny for almost nothing.....

See the bad thing about rebuilders is they dont rebuild the hole thing they just fix the gear or gears that broke adn then charge you 1200 + for the rebuild and hope it holds. My tranny was rebuild twice also when i took the car back to them after the rebuild failed they were trying to blame me that i was racing blah blah i almost got into a fight with the bastards lol. Their rebuild failed on me at 4 in the morning on a highway off ramp about 30 miles from home, were i used to work, i drove the 30 + miles home on two gears lol. Now i have collected enough parts for a 5spd swap the car has 120k on it the reuild tranny has about 35K on it so the 5spds going in soon

Threads like this make me appreciate my shop more and more. You know the issue you relayed in the first post points to a loose shifter assembily not a "flexing case". Plus the tranny's case shouldn't flex at all unless you are running some serious power or slammed it on the ground.
