Car Overheats When AC Is On

For some reason just recentley, my guage for the temperature jumps to HOT when the AC is on and if i'm not driving or doing anything below 50. I can keep the AC on during the highway and the car temp. stays normal, but when i'm doing city driving or the car is idling and the AC is on, the needle jumps to H in about 15-20 mins.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Have you had your coolant system serviced lately?? typically overheating when the /c is on is do to an inefficient cooling syste.

No I don't think I have... I did have my 3rd gear rebuilt on the transmission though... could that have anything to do with it?

Unless you removed your radiator during the process, I don't think so.

Verify that your fans are working (both of them).

If they aren't, obviously I have to replace them... if they are working, then what would it measure up to?

Double check if the fins on the radiator and ac condenser needs to be clean.

Just to be sure, turn them on and pop the hood. Just take a look at them spinning to be sure. Did you check the coolant level? When was the last time you had the coolant flushed? Possible that there is air in the system?

It could be your thermostat. Change that after you check your fans and radiator. It's an inexpensive change. That might be your problem...

my neighbor has the same problem with her chrysler concord... turns out she was low on coolant, and some idiot at a gas station put water in her coolant tank a while ago.. i had to leave, but i think they just put more coolant in the system and she was good to go.. definitely check ur level, and maybe flush it out.. my advice is to always start out with the cheapest possible solution, then work your way up the cost ladder so u dont end up wasting money

I had the same problem...It was the radiator...It was gummed up in the middle or something (forget what the mechanic told me). All I know is Nissan replaced everything, but problem solved after the radiator was replaced

Recently, I am having this problem. When using the A/C, I noticed that the temperature gauge goes up very high. Once I turn off the A/C, the temperture gauge will either stay and gradually drop to normal. When opening the hood and facing the engine, I notice the left fan is running, but the right fan does not run. Question: Has anyone have this problem and is the right fan for the A/C? Since this thread talks about the radiator or thermostat
