Steering Gear Box Leaking

Hi, if the steering gearbox is leaking do you have to replace the whole thing or just get the rubber seal replaced?

use a pick and poke a hole in the d/s tie rod boot. if it starts pouring/dripping out alot of power steering/tranny fluid(red) then you need a new rack. those boots are only there to keep dust from going into the rack. not for keeping p/s fluid in. also which dealer did you go to?

A Newburgh Nissan technician showed me the rack had oil or grease. He also said "keep an eye on the power steering fluid" howerver no fluid is dripping underneath the car.

what you can try is buying the PS stop leak stuff. worked well on my leaky 4th gen. certainly cheaper and easier then a new rack...also if you don't mind topping it up now and then your all set. One bad thing is it can leak unto your bushings and it eats away at them. however if you get polyurthane bushings then it wouldn't matter...regardless replacing the rack looks like a *****. i would probably pay someone to do it and i like working on cars...
good luck!
