You do realize that the P0420 code refers to the Bank 1 catalyst, which is integral with the y-pipe. Not a cheap fix any way you go about it.

What do you recommend.

Well there are several ways to go about it. You could start by monitoring the front & rear O2 sensors on Bank 1 at the same time to see if they are indeed indicating a bad converter. Some people have removed the front converters and the y-pipe altogether and replaced with an aftermarket pipe. O2 simulators are then required to fool the ECU. I don't really know enough about this procedure to comment further. Realistically though, when this P0420 code is generated, replacement of the y-pipe is the simplest solution, though not the cheapest.

P0420 mean one of the precats in your y-pipe is going bad... you need a new y-pipe and/or an o2 simulator.... not a cat

IMO, if the cats are bad, you might have other problems.

Think, root cause.

P0420 is referring to a bad reading on the front precat by the secondary 02.

There are two, and only two ways to remedy this based on past experience with this (both personal and reading on here).

1. replace the front precat. no.

2. install a $10 02 simulator to tell the computer that everything is fine. I just did this a couple weeks ago and passed emissions last week. I strongly suggest this route. Just make sure you hide the 02 sim and the wiring in case they do a visual inspection.

DO NOT buy a new catalytic converter. P0420 has nothing to do with the main cat whatsoever.

no, because on a cali spec car a ypipe does not replace the front precat, only the rear. P0420 is a front precat code.

P0430 is the radiator side, Bank 2, the bolt to the manifold pre-cat.

P0420 is the firewall side, Bank 1, the y-pipe pre-cat.

It will pass inspection no problem, you will still need an o2sim though.
