Hard Steering

My sister just bought a new Versa and I drove it last week and I just realized how HARD my steering is.

I cant even tell if the maximas have normally hard steering of if something is wrong with my P/S. I checked the fluid level and it was okay.

Any ideas how to determine if the P/S is to spec or if something is wrong?

TIA!

What I've observed is that the steering in the max is naturally quite heavy. I think this is partially to contend with the massive torque steer these cars produce on hard acceleration. The other part may be due to the somewhat quick-ratio steering. then again, I had a pickup before this and the steering on that was very light and took a million turns to lock.

If you think the issue is excessive, your P/S pump may have an issue and could either need a new belt or to be replaced. check the belts for excessive play or cracking prior to taking it in.

I actually just drove my friend's versa yesterday and noticed no drastic difference in weight between my car and her mom's 2007 maxima which feels just like my steering...change the fluid out or see if your PS pump is failing you.

what year is ur max? never drove the new 6th gens... so i cant tell how the steering is... but the versa felt immensily lighter than my max (yr 2000)

It never bugged me before, but after driving her car I realized how hard my steering is.

I guess the very first step is to drive anoher 5th gen and determine if they all designed this way or if i have a bug.

my neighbor has a 5.5th gen.. i'll ask him to let me go for a spin... if they are known for a heavy steering then that is it. I just want to feel another maxima to confirm that my steering is okay.

Check ps fluid levels and for any leaks first
