I'm going to buy a 2002 manual SE soon. But I really don't know anything about this Helical Limited Slip Differential. What does it do? Can anyone help? Thanks.

I can't answer you, but if you're gonna get it soon, you don't have to worry about it. It won't be available till December anyway.

In general, any limited slip diff provides additional traction by sending more torque to the wheel that isn't spinning. The Helical type sounds like a Torsen type unit rather than a clutch or cone type posi or the viscous type used in the 20th AE model. I've seen a Torsen write-up, but I still don't quite grasp the mechanics of how it works. It's apparently better for cornering, since it has quicker action than a viscous diff and it doesn't wear itself out from all the sliding friction generated when there is a difference in drive wheel speeds as is forced to happen with clutch or cone posi's.

Probably more detailed info is available through places like www.camaroz28.com or other F-body site, since the Torsen diff was an option on some models of Firebirds/Camaros. People on the auto-x & road race forums keep mentioning it.

Is Helical Limited Slip Differential similar to
Mechanical Limited Slip Differential?

Does HLSD employ some variant of worm gearing?
