Guys,
I have a '96 max se and want a new 2001 se anniversary. The dealer said they would give me $6,500 for it in trade in. It has about 102k miles on it and is not in the best of shape. The new car sticker is 31,900k. Invoice is 28,900 or so. After the rebate he is going to give it to me for 28,200. Does this seem reasonable? I always have good luck getting burned so I thought I would get some second opinions. I still am thinking about getting the gold warranty. Anyone have any feedback or recomendations regarding this? Is it worth it? Also the new max has just about all the options and they are kind of hard to find in so cal these days. I am just seeing all these other car companies advertise thousands in rebates and dont want to miss out. Is there any other reccomendations you guys have after buying it new? Should I get anything else thrown in? Thanks for the help........Dave

Bargain more. 28K+ seems way too high, particularly considering the 2002s are coming out soon. I paid 24.5k for a fully loaded SE in Feb. 2001 (in GA). I'm not sure what prices are like in So.Cal, but I don't think an AE is worth 4k+ more than mine.
Keep bargaining
I paid 27.4k before tax for mine in February and it's got everything but CD changer. I wouldn't bother with the gold warranty unless you think you're going to keep the car that long without modding.
Bargain with them. I think Nissan has a 3.9 APR financing for 2k1 Maximas through August 31. Check the Nissan website. Find out what the invoice price for the whole car including the options of what you like in it. Start with
the invoice price and talk up. Make sure you set the price you want to pay after finding out what it cost for them. If they go over your set price, leave. Take your business elsewhere. Plus, they would want to get rid of the 2k1 for 2k2 that is coming in. This is the best time to get it....Good Luck.

NEGOTIATE!!! Some Nissan dealers have 2002s in stock already. More are coming. I am considering a new max and have been given $2500-3000 off 2001 GLE just by asking what they can do for me. If I really negotiated hard, I feel I could realistically get them down another $500-1000 or possibly more. The 2002 are different making 2001s a hard sale in the near future. This is one of the best times to buy a new car becuase dealers have an extremely hard time selling older gen cars along side the current gen cars. So don't feel funny pushing the dealer for a good price.
I imagine the dealer is going to detail your 96 and ask at least $8,500 for it. I just last year sold a nice 89 SE with leather and 100K miles for $6,500 and the dealer was going to give me $3k in trade!
You should go to the Kelly blue book site and see what they say your 96 is worth. Granted they are a little high, but I got their value as my car was in mint condition.
Then try and sell it yourself, screw the dealer.
As for price, my Loaded 2k SE was $29k on the sticker.
I went in at the end of the month and got it for invoice or
$26k. They are desperate to make their quota for the month, so you are in the drivers seat.
From what you wrote, the dealer is getting a sweet deal at the expense of your wallet.
Good luck

consider seeing what carmax will offer you for your car, or first sell your max through the paper. (carmax offered me more than the dealer for my used car) and i wouldn't pay over 28k for the AE (your used car not included). IMHO
i got my 2001SE for $25,125.00 and the MSRP waas $30,000!!!!! I had all the options except meridian package.....i hda bose 6 cd changer and all that stuff.....the trick is keep arguing until they go to very low price and even when they do say u want it to be lower.....wait until dealer gets really ticked off and tells u to leave then say u want the last price he quoted and he will give it too you....my dealers face got so red cause i kept asking for lower price

I too am in a similar boat. I'm negotiating on a 2001 SE AE 5spd model w/ every available option. MSRP on the car is $31,162 and the invoice is $28,350.00. The car was involved in a hail storm which made three small dents in it. The dealer had it "fixed" by a paintless dent removal guy so he is offering me a price of $27,600.00. The dealer says that the dents are completely unnoticeable and no paint work of any kind was involved. It is the last SE AE 5spd in black that they have. I'll have to drive a good distance to get it, but I plan on being in that area on vacation next week. Is this a fair deal? What should I counteroffer and finally refuse to go above.
