I have a 2001 Maxima SE. It came with the middle of the line 120 watt stock stereo. I am now preparing to buy one of the stock 6 disc changers for it. When choosing between the in dash version or the trunk version of the 6 disc changer, I am thinking that it is better to get the trunk one. As I understand it, the in dash one is only compatible with the GXE's stripper tape deck (for 2001). So, I would in essence have to remove my current stock radio and put in the GXE's if I want the in dash 6 disc changer, leaving me with a better stock stereo with no place to go. If I go the trunk way, though, I will not have to swap out anything. Am I right with this reasoning (of the advantage of the trunk changer) or can anyone else tell me other advantages of the in-dash variety? What would you pick? Thanks!

You are totally correct There is no point of getting an in dash changer if you have a "big" radio. I guess it is more convenient to have the in dash 6-cd changer, but you already have a normal in dash single cd player. So just buy the regular Nissan trunk mounted 6-cd changer unless you think you may want to go with an aftermarket system...

Looks like a Sanyo/Clarion/Alpine, one of those compact 6 disc changers with a 2 piece door ...maybe I'll get one.

Yeah. . . I went to my Nissan Dealer and that is actually the one that they sell you. I paid about 330 dollars for it (you know they of course marked it up a little), but I found that to be quite convenient that the dealer sells the cheaper one. The good part of it is that with the Nissan dealer installing the cheaper unit, I don't have to worry about a bad electrical installation voiding the factory warranty. A Nissan tech installed it. So far, it does sound great and never seems to skip. Thanks for the heads up!

Tim. . .

Did the OEM from Courtesy come with all the wiring for that price as well? I did notice the Crutchfield no-name changer does come with the wire to the trunk. . .
