Why upgrade a Maxima?
#1
I drive a 2000 Maxima SE Automatic and I'm happy enough with it for daily driving. But for street and track racing, I'm wondering why I should spend gobs of money to fix up a mid-mid-range car just to get it to upper-mid-range in terms of performance. You still can't compete racing against Mustang GTs, 300ZXs, or Z28 Camaros. Sure they're a different class of car, but I want to beat them.
My dilemna is, I still owe $15000 on my Maxima. A used 1994-96 300ZX is only $20,000. So why spend the $15000 + $5000 in upgrades to get a medium speed Maxima? For the same price I can get a 300ZX, and with another $5-10K in upgrades I could race Ferraris and Corvettes.
I don't mean to put down any of your enthusiasm for this car. I love my Maxima, I'm just tired of getting beat by Camaros and Mustangs. A week ago an Audi stationwagon beat me down the street. A freakin stationwagon!!

Because it's fun to. Sure, we will never run sub 12 second quarter miles. But it is fun to run against some dork in a stock Mustang and if your lucky enough a GT at that, and beat him. It shocks the heck out of them. Also the maxima is very roomy, nice to travel in. Looks better than most cars on the road, it is not a Honda. And right out of the box it performs on a level similar to that of sedans worth 10-15K more. I bought my Max because ever since I rode in my friends 3rd gen, and another's 4th gen Maxima, I loved them. And if I can make it go faster, then why not?

Why? Because you can.
No one's expecting the Max to go up against true sports cars. But it sure is cool to see it be competitive with cars in its own class (and sometimes higher ). Not to mention the fact that it's fun to find out and improve upon the chunk of metal that you've dumped 25k in to start with.

if you wonder why mod a max to make it sportier and faster and would rather spend max money for a 300zx.. why are you racing your max? its just a sedan to you right?
why did you race the station wagon?the max has comfort and looks.. why not make it even better by making it sportier?

Why race?
I'd race in a school bus if that's what I drove. I guess I am sort of mixing apples and oranges when I try to race sports cars.
I raced the station wagon because the 45 year old guy revved his engine at the light and took off just to show me up. Maybe he beat me because he got the quick start, but he was driving an Audi 2.7 T stationwagon.
I'm just trying to get your opinions to justify my spending money to upgrade my Maxima. I'm gonna do it anyways, just it'll make me feel better with your support.
Future Mods:
Stillen Supercharger
Ninja front fascia and side skirts, not sure about the rear valance
Upgrade speakers and add a sub
FSTB and sway bar
Tokico shocks\struts and H&R springs
Nitrous? (if I keep getting beat by stationwagons)

I've figured the payback of modding my Maxima is very minimal, considering the availability of parts, the cost of them, and what they actually do (eg the performance increase). It's almost a losing proposition.

because
the 5th generation maximas look better than a used 300ZX, they look more expensive, they aren't that slow. the maxima is a pretty fast car in v6 form, most v6's out there can't touch the numbers that a maxima puts out. can you beat a mustang v6? i thought so, and the maxima looks better doing it too. even if you do get an old 300zx and burn me or have a mustang GT, its not all about speed. its about looks, reliability, and speed all combined together. if i wanted a mustang GT i could afford one, a SE maxima with options costs a lil more than a GT, but the mustang loses resale value faster and is less reliable than a maxima in my opinion. and a 300zx doesn't even turn many eyes going down the street because most of them are old, and even if they do go fast, they don't look as good as a new maxima.
sorry to go on, but just wanted to tell you why i mod my maxima and love it.
peace.

because we need the power AND space, if you need pure power, get a muscle car, if you need pure space, get a minivan. you cannot mod a z car to give you more space to put stuff and people in but you can make a maxima go faster

try go camping in the Z with 2 ppl + luggage and all the ground clearance it have, or go skiing with the Z, people who drives sport car have no life all they can do is drive and cannot do many outdoor activities.
