My friend(Briguymax) has a 97 Maxima 5 speed with a Cattman Y, JWT Popcharger, Apexi Catback, and ACT Street Clutch as performance mods. I have similar mods and he still beats me. We raced from 40 mph in second gear to about 95 mph. Second gear we are pretty even, but when he hits third he pulls about a car on me. I have similar mods, so I dont know why he beats me. Did they change the gearing in the 5 speed version of the 5th gens? I am thinking seriously about buying a UDP will this help me out in third gear(midrange)?? Is there something wrong with my car?? I thought that the 5th gens were quicker up top.

I shift at redline...I shift by letting off the gas and then dumping the clutch out to engage. I dont know where he shifts at??

I still say switch cars and see what happens.... its the only way to rule out differences between drivers... Also, are you heavier than him?

You BOTH should get dyno runs at the same place and same time frame for comparisons. I'd like to know why.

What are the weights of the 4th gen vs. 5th gen?

4th gens are definitely lighter than 5th gens. What model Max does Briguymax have (GXE's are lighter than SE's)?

Brian has a SE and so do I. My car is equipped with 17" rims vs 16" on his 97'.... that could make a very slight difference.

Our shifts are right on together....neither of us has a driver advantage. my car pulls in gears NOT during shifts. He has the best chance on a 2nd gear start. he's with me almost all the way though second....I pull only VERY slowly. Then as soon as we hit third, it's all over for him. If we start from a dead stop it's an even worse story for his 5th gen. I will stick by my guns and say that mod for mod....the 4th gen is RIGHT with the 5th gen. if he gets his custom b-pipe, he'll probably be just about even with me (from a roll), then I'll spray

We probably weigh about the same, and I have a disadvantage of heavy stereo equipment in the back of my max.

If we had the money, we'd go get dynoed.

Sorry to break it to you pal but your car is a good 200 to 300 lbs heavier than his. Look up the curb weights of the standard SE and you will see this. Plus with your 17s and his 16s, that is even more weight.

Uh, crazy idea, and probably wrontg, but here it goes. 1.)The peak HP figures for the 5th gens are at redline, right? The 5th gen pulling that high accomplishes two things, one he doesn't end up losing power up there like a 4th gen would and second, his power dropoff into 3th gear isn't as severe. 2.)His engine is newer, and is probably still 'stronger;, meaning tighter seals, higher compression, and as a result, 'more power'. Ok, shoot away.
