I've had a 2001 Maxima for a couple months now and it was time to do the first oil change on this virgin car. I'm very use to working on my '93 max, but this one is a good bit different under the hood.

Had a very strange occurrence. I changed the oil, and filter. I used a Bosch filter. Started the car and it sounded like crap. It Didn't want to run, and sounded very rough. So I shut it down immediately. I checked the oil, filter, drain plug. Everything looked fine. Tried the engine again and it still sounded horrible. I finally just did the job over again. New oil, new filter. This time it sounded rough, but it got better with in a second or so and then cleaned up. Now it sounds fine. Did I miss something? I've been changing oil in my '93 max since day one and never have had a problem. Could the oil filter have been bad? Some type of vacuum lock? The only thing different I did the second time was I filled the oil filter about half full before putting it on, just to make sure it was not some type of vacuum lock. The filter I took out had not noticeable defect.

I'm new to 2001. Any ideas on this normally trival task?

cheers,

GPB

First time I did my oil change I didn't experience this. The one thing that i found strange was that the filter i replaced was a Ford oil filter. I used 10w-40 Mobil synthetic. What did you used?

I had a similiar situation but I was not doing an oil change. I started the car and moved it about 10 feet. I turned it off. I let it sit over night. The next morning, I started it and it sounded like hell for about 15 seconds. I thought it was coming apart. The car had less than 6,000 miles on it. It never happened again.

Perhaps it is coincidental you were changing the oil when this happened?

This might seem dumb, but make sure the oil cap fits and it sealed correctly. ON my ford probe, while the motor was running, you could remove the oil fill cap and the motor would start to choke hesitate shutter and eventually stall. I am not sure if the Max motor is like that but it worth a check.

I've done 4-5 oil changes myself and havn't had any problems. I suspect you got a bad oil filter. dont't know what esle it could be.
I use NAPA gold filters, one of the best out there. Also Mobil 1.
Go to a NAPA store and they should have cut aways showing the guts of a FRAM versus the NAPA filters. It is real eye opener, as I always thought FRAM was ok to good. Now I know they are junk.

Good luck

I think

assuming the Oil light went off, its just a coincidence.

if you start the car for a short time, then shut off, then restart within 30 mins, what you explain will occur. Its something alot of max's do for the first 5000-10000 miles. I think it just caught you at a bad time. Its fuel related, not oil so dont worry. I think you will find that in the summer, your car will do this a few times.

matter of fact, go out and start it. run for about 2 mins, shut off, then come back in 20 mins. 90% chance it will do it again.. dont worry, its part of the breakin and goes way.
