I am not real good with the technical terms, but I'll still try to describe the intake a friend of mine has suggested. We plan on using the K&N panel filter. The stock scoop apparently flows into a sound resonator (white tank below battery), which connects to the air filter. We intend to disconnect the sound resonator and run a 3 inch tube directly down (from where the resonator was connected) to the plastic shield that is mounted under the car. The plastic shield will be replaced with a custom made aluminum shield, same size, but the new shield will be designed to serve as a GIANT cold air scoop, funneling air into the sealed tube and directly to the filter. Next we will put some expandable foam or some type of plug in the stock scoop to avoid losing cold air when it comes up. The tricky part will be designing and building the shield/scoop, and making sure there remains adequate ground clearance (I'd hate to accidently hit a curb when parking and hear a loud crunch). We are basically trying to design a pressurized and more direct cold air induction. Do you guys think there's any potential here?

it's a great idea, and many of us are running it already. It works great. And I use an AMsoil Filter. Ooglie it here to stay.

one question though, if you plugged the stock intake, wouldn't you run a greater risk of pulling water up your new pipe, albeit if the condition arise?

By leaving the stock intake open or partially open it acts like a type of bypass valve in the event of water plugging or entering the OSCAI. Damn this place is slow today(server).

We were planning on drilling a few small holes in the scoop itself to avoid any water accumulation problems. I understand what you guys are saying though, if water did get sucked up into the OSCAI that would not be good. But if we don't plug the stock scoop, wouldn't air then escape out and I would lose any advantage to having a funnel scoop that's around 2 1/2 feet wide...I've been assuming that there would be a noticable performance advantage to using a large funnel scoop.. is that correct? Also, would there be any benefit if the K&N panel filter was replaced with a cone filter?

you won't lose any air out through the stock scoop since you are moving forward and air is being forced into the scoop. The air will travel into the scoop towards the filter when you are moving.

Has anyone thought about using a NACA duct at the bottom of the OSCAI tube? You've seen these ducts in the windows of Winston cup cars, they're shaped like the space shuttle in profile, but are flush. They are available in many sizes in catalogs like Racer Wholesale and Pegasus, and are pretty cheap. These ducts would sit flush with the belly pan, but should allow alot of air in (without alot of water) Just a thought-

PVCCAI

If anyone wants a CAI duplicate. All you need is some 3.25in PVC and a cone filter.. I have a friend who did this on his G20 and it works exactly the same as the real thing.. He only spent $50.. $35 for the cone filter and $15 for pvc pipes, clamps etc... I'll try to get some pics and instructions..

Naca ducts with 3" inlets can be found at http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/ I will be using # SPA-D102, the price is $15.99, and 3" dryer vent tubing (Light and low restriction). I'll post pics when I'm done.
