Almost lost control today, DAMN tires...

Well, today I had a bit of a nervous experience on the road. We have had bad rains lately and today was one of the worst. I just entered a freeway, luckly no one was on it really around me. I got into the center lane accerating. I was around 55 or so when all of a sudden I hit some water I did not see, it wasn't visable (it was pouring), the ****ty tires lost it, hydroplanned, car started pushing hard to the right, I compensated the steering, well it it helped , but all of a sudden my rear end started to hydroplane too! Oh **** I said, The car was sliding at a 45 degree angle down the freeway. I turned the steering carefully to the left towards the direction I was going, it got traction again and pulled me straight. I was shaking like crazy after that. Never had that happen to me on the highway or at that speed. These tires SUCK! Very dangerous!

I hear ya. I agree that the tires suck. I have slipped with those tires too many times. Maybe it's just my driving style though. I've got 10000 miles on my Max and I rotated those tires at 5000 miles and all tires look like slicks. There is like no tread left. Is that suppose to happen so quickly?

Which tires do you have?
Do you guys have the stock Potenzas or Proxes? Or maybe i'm confused and 2001s come with only one brand of tire.
I had Proxes A05s on my 2000 Maxima SE. They kind of sucked too for wet traction. I got 22k miles from them, and the rear tires are still good for maybe another 20k.
I swapped to Nitto 555 tires, they've done well in bad weather.
Russ, you're from Texas, right? It's been raining like nuts in Houston the past few days.
Drive carefully.

good to hear you managed to wrangle it back on track. just swap out the tires. as far as i'm concerned it's cheap insurance... and i'm no millionaire.
i've had sidewall failure on TWO of my potenzas. i'm in california, so water isn't too much of a concern, but with weak sidewalls, they're not safe regardless of water. i can't imagine driving them in wetter climes.

Same situation here. Been hydroplaning like crazy the past couple of days here. Fronts are wearing out fast at 10k. I have some fun occasionally but don't regularly 'burn-out' or push too hard into corners.
These tires emphatically SUCK!!!

just imagine doing that on the crappy GXE stock tires
or imagine driving a car that weighs 2100lbs, FWD, and has smaller brakes than bicycles :eek2:
least you didn't break anything!
thought about changing to different tires?

I think it is safe to say we all have thought about changing...problem is the known famous and long debate on the shortage of replacement tires in teh stock size and the controversy over 'exceeding rim widths'.
I just want them off my car!!! I may even go cheap like Firehawk LH's or something to get me through for a while and wait to see if other manufacturers finally start producing ones that are a direct fit. Even going with cheap temporary tires could not likely be worse than driving on the RE92's.

Been driving through some heavy rain recently and I feel a little bit of un-surefootedness from the tires, like I could possibly hydroplane or lose control, but doing ok so far.

well...
stock tires always suck alittle. They are a middle of the road compromise. Want something ultra sticky? fine, you wont have any wet handling. Want a aquatread? Be ready to take turns at posted speed or less...
I think the moral of the story is if you *cant* see the puddle of water because it's raining *that* hard and you blast thru it at 55, you're guaranteed to hydroplane.
You would have been ticketed for too fast for conditions had you wrecked.
While the Goodyear HP Ultra sucks in many ways, they pump a ton of water. they are one of the few tires that will pump water well all the way thru treadwear. True "aquatreads" dont pump so well after 1/2 treadwear I've been told.

Re: well...
I agree with TimW because I was driving my girl's Saturn home from a snowboarding trip and it was pouring. Posted speed limit there on I-5 was 60mph I was going around 50mph and got stuck in one of those ditches that those damn rigs make in the road.
I tried to edge my way out slowly and the whole car hydroplaned and spun twice. On our second time around and with the steering wheel cranked into the direction of the slide. Some freak with a death wish driving a Camaro was not slowing down....we rubbed and he went flying. He hit the wall and lost his rear axle. I on the other hand had a little crayon mark on my girls car, recovered and checked if he was alright. Of course the ***** was holding his neck and immediately called the cops. Cop shows up and writes me a ticket for "driving to fast for conditions". I fought it in court and the judge said that no matter how fast I was going if I hydroplaned I was driving too fast. I blame the Saturn.

have any of you thought to upgrade to the proxes T1. I have them and only get about 10k miles out of them but I think that you will have a hard time finding a tire that give that kind of wet and dry traction at that price. the 205/45/16 were $160/tire.
